Dry Hopped Lager

Originally released as the 43rd edition of our monthly Ides beer series, celebrating people, places and stories of Toronto (in this case, the success of our pro basketball team), this crisp, aromatic golden lager bursts with European hop flavour.

473 mL can from the LCBO; coded L24073 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a hazy pale golden-yellow, kicking up one finger of foamy white head that fades within a couple of minutes. A frothy collar and filmy cap remain indefinitely, with good lace deposition after a sip or two. Grainy aroma accented by floral hops, lemon zest and grassiness.

The flavour profile is along the same lines - a basic malt backbone, with the dry hops filling in the details. Grainy, crackery sweetness is paired with lemony citrus, floral hops and some earl grey tea-leafy bitterness on the back end. Mildly citrusy, floral aftertaste that fades to dry. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that prickles and prods the tongue relentlessly during each sip; feels crisp and a bit frothy, with decent drinkability. Finishing off one glass is easy enough, but I'm not sure I'd go for a second.

Final Grade: 3.73, a respectable B grade. Remember the Grizzlies is far from amazing, which I suppose makes it an appropriate tribute to the basketball team it is either honouring or making fun of. The hop flavours are nice enough, even though this is not a particularly fresh sample - I enjoyed the lemon and earl grey tea notes, which added some much-needed character to an otherwise forgettable pale lager. I would try this again if I happened upon a fresh can.

473ml can served cold into a pint glass. Part of the Henderson/ Bench mixed pack this summer.

Appearance - Semi hazy golden brew with a multiple finger head and good retention. Some visible bubbles and minimal lacing.

Smell - Clean and grainy with a touch of floral hops. Not the biggest nose, but floral aspects are good.

Taste - Light and crisp with some grainy qualities and a healthy earthy and floral hop balance.

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, quite fizzy.

Overall - Good if unspectacular well hopped lager. Not much to say beyond that.
