With the taste of summer in mind, the brewers of Brooklyn set their sights on the tangy, tart, refreshing charm that's best captured in red sumac berries. And with the dog days of summer upon us we're going to need a bright spot just as this.

Red Sumac Wit pours a faint peachy mauve with the cloudy gestures that wheat beer show best. As its creamy meringue swirls to draw the nose close, it does so with the perfume of citrus, sour cherry, berry, green apple and under-ripened grape. The first sips are supple and sweet, suggestive of bread dough and powdered sugar laced with sweetheart candy.

While the sweetness quickly fades from the palate, the beer's more refreshing endearments ensue. With an exoskeleton of malt creaminess remaining, the tartness rules across the middle, bringing a host of crabapple, lemon peel, orange peel, gooseberry, sour cherry, berry, grape flavors that carry a snappy but juicy taste. A spicy rebuttal of white and alligator pepper are perfumy even in taste but still carrying a firm bite.

Medium-light on the palate, the creamy and almost sour ale strips the thirst with ease and refreshes the palate effortlessly. A quick finish of pepper and mildly astringent sourness finishes the taste quickly but with a brief wave of wheat and perfume as it exits.

64 ounce growler
Served in a pokal glass

This beer pours amber with golden highlights. It is hazy. The head stands an inch tall and is beige in color and leaves little lacing.

The smell is of tart, ripe red fruit. I am unfamiliar with the aroma of sumac, but I guess that is what I am smelling.

The taste follows the nose. It obviously has wit characteristics along with tart, red fruit.

Medium mouthfeel

My girlfriend let me steal a pour off her growler. It is a refreshing wit.

On-tap 10/30/2015 at Doherty’s Ale House, in Warwick, RI, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a light amber color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, Belgian yeast, caramelized malts, some fruit and some hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat, Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of fruit and caramel come in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body but heavy for the style, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, decent variation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

From 10/01/15 notes. 16 oz. pour in a pint glass at The Amsterdam Alehouse in NYC.

Pours a clear amber-red color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident. Bready malts, fruity malts, dough, wheat, floral notes, and light oak. Thin body and low carbonation.

Overall not a lot going on here and thin in the moutfeel...not their best beer. Wouldn't seek it out again.
