In Portland pre-Love and Pils the Thursday before for I need a day to play when up this way. Stops seen along the way and now hotel’d up, we set out late knowing we’ll only be good for one place tonight and I’ve got a pretty good idea what that place is, if only I can remember where that place is. Oh yeah, it’s in the seedy underbelly of whatever the road above it is, with its heavy late night police activity & Gritty’s. And it’s not really seedy at all, but rather clubby and packed with Portland kids annoying, these Wharf Alley establishments around us are and something of a mess to wade through to get here. Thankfully, the good beer bar itself flies under the madness radar…

A seemingly single tight room with an ‘L’ shaped bowling lane topped bar of light wood framed in darker wood, horizontal plank wood base, and post foot box off to the left. Seating for 20 on squared stools. Taps on the inside of the bar (6 taps on a ceramic tower, an 8 tap stainless, 1 on a single cylinder upright, 8 more on a double 4 stainless, and a single 4 further along, that’s 27 in all), with glassware around it and more dangling above from a rack overhead. Sink action behind the bar, with a shelf on the wall above holding booze, and a horizontal board in the corner listing cocktails, wine, & whiskey. A large fryer/grill/burner zone sits aside it; its hood pasted with brewery stickers.

Walls of distressed brick & plank wood, laminated dark wood rafter ceiling, and wide wood plank floors. Phat ductwork, mostly obstructed by boards, and single filament bulbs tracing the bar. Dead soldier bottles & cans lining the rafters. Beer trays, a few framed pics, and license plates lining the glassware rack a-dangling. The obligatory Heady poster on the back wall. Flat in the corner for looking at. Old style cash register with origami dollar bills atop.

Behind me where I’m seated, a bar counter space for 5 with a food board above it. Grass fed burger (cooked medium) for $6, I want the that! Or wait, tacos? Why, I like tacos. Chicken. No, Al Pastor pork, yeah, err, shrimp, maybe one of each. No, the mesquite chicken sandwich, yeah, okay, hold. How ‘bout a grilled mothafuckincheese, daaaaaaamn. It’s a slight tight menu and I could easily work through this menu, but it’ll be nothing tonight as I’m still lobster rolled up from Kittery (and lest we forget that pie from Modern in New Haven a few hours before that). You know, Witz talked a mean burger game but did not follow through.

A step up to the rear holds a single keg collar pasted picnic table. Long horizontal board above listing taps in 3 rows of 9 each (brewery beer, style, & price). The wares from Maine are underlined to indicate as such. And through to the side room I didn’t know was there. A small bar to the rear and 4 pasted picnics placed vertically & horizontally, Battleship style. Coolers against the wall, don’t think there’s anything in them.

27 taps in all, one of which is empty just now. 16 beers are Maine offerings and all but a handful of them are very local to here. That’s 3 each from Bissell Brothers, Foundation, & Austin Street, 2 each from Oxbow & Orono, and single entries from Allagash, Maine Beer, & Lone Pine. The remaining 10 are mostly imports (Alvinne Wild West Plum Edition, BFM Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien, Fruh Kolsch, Weihenstephaner Hefe, De Molen Hell & Damnation, Duchesse De Bourgogne), save a lone non-Maine craft beer entry (Lawsons Super Session #8), a single cider (Shacksbury Dry), and a pair of wines (Zardetto Prosecco, Angeline Pinot Noir). I started with an Oxbow Kriekalore (so fooking dry), then a Fruh Kolsch (due to it being awesome), and wound down with a Lone Pine Chaga Stout (spicy & mushroom earthy, interesting). Beers were in good shape.

Curt tending. We are getting the skinny and the what what. Good tap list, always something from B. United to take in. Yes, this is Blackback King’s Head Ricky’s bar. We’ve been flowing his campaign since that House of Hardy poster in Waterbury. He’s quite the character. Good beer people scene. I hope I got out of there early, I’m going to need the sleep. I don’t know it yet, but tomorrow, I’m going to get the late night early morning call for rescue once somebuddy finds his car towed…

Very cool spot with exposed brick , barn board and beams . Not sure how many taps they have but its a lot . Taps are dominated with great local Maine breweries , Bissell ,Foundation , Allagash , Ausin street & Battery steel . All styles seem very well represented not just ipa's . Staff seemed knowledgeable and were attentive . We had the cheese plate which was a bit of a miss but my buddy had a burger and said it was great , can't go wrong with a good burger so .....next time I guess . Overall loved the place and can't wait to go back .

Stopped here later on in the evening as the place ahead a smaller crowd than some other bars. Very old narrow brick building with a long lighter wood bar. Grill is located behind the bar. 18 beers on draft here, with a focus on local brews. The beers were fresh and reasonably priced. Service was decent during my visit. This is a nice bar with a decent selection, but the list of previous 4.9 and 5's from single review newbies has this place ranked a bit higher than it should be. I preferred it's sister bar The King's Head over this place.

My wife and I stumbled upon this gem of a place. It's got a rustic vibe and a no frills attitude. The place serves stellar beers and the people working there match 'em. It's not a place that is trying to be anything other than a sweet spot to settle in for a few hours and delicious burgers. Not pretentious in the slightest, nor overly trendy. The people working there are incredibly kind, thoughtful, and they really understand how simple and yet how powerful good conversation and great beer can be when combined. My wife and I live three hours away on MDI. We're coming back to P-Town just to hang out in the cozy nooks at the Mash Tun. Keep the taps flowing!

I saw a sign that said craft beer and grass-fed burgers for $6. If this was a slogan for a presidential candidate, they'd get my vote. I haven't had a chance to sample all the 20ish beers there yet but there's plenty of local ones and the food menu is small, simple, and delicious. This bar is right in the heart of the old port and I find myself stopping in there more and more often. The fries and brussel sprouts are damn good too.

Great place. We went there shortly after it opened. Cool venue, beautiful brick and a nice bar. Great beer selection. Guys behind the bar were cool and good for conversation. Food menu was selective and killer. We got a grass fed beef burger for something like 5 bucks. Prices were amazing! We had brussel sprouts and their fries too. Bar stools had some subtle movie quotes on them too- nice touch for a movie guy. 10/10 would go again.

Awesome new spot for Portland's vibrant beer scene. Best friggin burger on the planet. Long narrow wood bar with roughly 18-20 taps that rotate frequently. Bissell, Foundation & Allagash are mainstays! I am definitely a new regular. Gary is one of the best bartenders... Give the place a shot of you want quality.

Great Local beer and burger bar. Twenty or so tap list with emphasis on new Maine craft and Belgian and Germans mixed in. Always have at least one hard to find local brew available with a healthy turnover. Excellent reasonably priced burgers, and among the best fries in Portland. Great welcoming service helps to make Mash Tun among the best beer bars in the Portland area.

The Parmesan cheddar fried were great. They have a great selection between local ales, and European sours. It's a cozy little place right in the middle of everything in the Old Port. The staff was very friendly and happy to suggest/discuss local beers. I highly recommend.

I've been to 'Mash Tun' quite a few times. They carry some local greats (Bissel, Foundation) and worldy greats (Alvinne). This is a great spot to hit mid day for a nice small glass of beer - at night it can get pretty busy in the small space but the bartenders and the food will keep you happy!

Great vibe, its cozy, theres cold beer and good food (I only wish they had a slightly larger menu) - Try the burger + add fries, you won't be disappointed. Definitely a spot you should try.

They don't have the biggest selection of beer in town, but they have a phenomenal well curated selection that turns over regularly. I feel like the tap list is entirely different every time I stop by.

It's a great place to belly up and have a few beers at the bar. There are a handful of small tables in the back if you've got a group. They've also got prosecco on tap if you have a non-beer drinker with you...

Great new(ish) spot in downtown Portland. Phenomenal beer selection including quite a few local beers. I took my mom and aunt there, both of whom are not really beer drinkers. The staff was knowledgeable in choosing a proper beverage for each of them. They were looking for an easy place to grab a bite on a busy day in Portland. With a small grill behind the bar they were able to cook us each a delicious affordable burger to our tastes.

Awesome sister restaurant to the King's Head Pub , if you're a beer drinker don't overlook this spot!

Food menu is small but super cheap and very tasty ($6 burger, $5 chicken sandwich!). A welcome addition to Portland's Old Port.
