very unique brew here, unexpected and delicious, i have not had much from these guys, but this immediately presents itself as well ahead of the curve, refined better than a lot of these, whole fruit or not, its not forced or overdone, and i think the mint is what makes this so unique, really clever and good. pink toned, not too thick looking, holding a short head, the blueberries have given this a lot of color. the nose is tart and tannic from the fruit, not jammy and sweet, and pretty intense really. citrus from the souring, a hint of lime in this too, zesty and essential, fresh and lightening this some, the mint is there too, peppy and natural and strong enough to come through all the berries, not much salt or grain or hops, and the final ferment seems pretty tidy, like this is technically pretty solid for how ambitious the flavor combination is. the taste is cool blueberries all through it, slightly red winey to me, tart for sure, and with this aspect accentuated by the lacto, i like this being more tangy than sweet, and it not having vanilla and marshmallow and all that garbage in it. the mint comes on mid palate and seems to stand out more as it warms up, muddled and fresh and distinctive, short of medicinal or dental, but i could see how some might say that, the drying salt at the end comes out of nowhere and is great with the fruit, cuts it all off quick enough for this to still be kind of drinkable even if its too flavorful for refreshment in the traditional sense. not too sour to drink, good balance between the mint, the berries, and the lime, and its cleaner than it seems possible for it to be at the end. really fun beer, inventive and smart. ill be on the lookout for more from urban south.
