Our very good friends from Coronado Brewing Company in San Diego came down and brewed with us for our first ever brew on our brand new 7 Barrel pilot system. We were super excited when they wanted to do something a little of the ordinary, so we threw together a Blueberry and Coffee kettle sour. Wheat and pilsner make up the malt base, absurd amount of blueberry puree and locally roasted coffee from HEY Coffee Co. Sweetness of the blueberries balance the acidity while the coffee lends a delicate fruit and earthy tone to the finish.

this is weird and good, blueberry and coffee in a kettle sour, pretty impressive, not a wild ale as its listed here i dont think, but whatever, it certainly isnt hurting for complexity. its a great combination of aromas and flavors, oddly appealing with the acidity actually, tart but not crazy sour, coffee and blueberries both have some natural acidity, and this works with that, doesnt run it over, and overall this is pretty compelling. a little thicker looking, violet colored, more the blue than the bean, kind of murky and not much head, but the color is nice and this feels sort of frothy and creamy for a sour beer when i drink it, a fine texture for this. the nose is awesome, the blueberry is deep and concentrated and high saturation and jammy and just a little sweet, which works great with the lemony acidity this has, and also adds a cool red or even port wine aspect to the overall experience, which is also true in the taste. the coffee is quite complex too, not over roasted although there is some earthy bitterness keeping the fruit in check, it hints at dry cocoa, almond, and even smoke, very complex and very cool with the berries, a compatible raisin note as well. the flavor is great, its not one then the other, they have a real back and forth going, sweet berries up front, almost a chocolate covered dehydrated blueberry thing in the middle, good espresso and its crema right there too, and the sourness really doesnt kick up until the end. i taste the coffee last, but there is red wine, black currant, and milk chocolate late as well, a hint of caramel and hazelnut, citrus in the acid, light vanilla, not too much residual sugar, pleasant aftertaste. this is real distinctive, some might say over fruited, but i like the proportions. creative stuff!
