Scene Four was aged in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels. This beer opens up with a big dark chocolate, fresh roasted coffee and praline aroma. DA4 puts forth tasting notes of cocoa, vanilla fig, plum and sweet bourbon. We utilized an array of roasted dark specialty malt to build layers of chocolate and roasted flavor in this beer. The final complement to DA4 was a shot of Costa Rica Tarrazu coffee, which was freshly roasted that day by Brio Coffee Works, and a touch of split Madagascar vanilla beans.

Coffee came across with good bakers chocolate bitterness when cold, but as it warmed, became very green pepper heavy. It remained vegetal throughout, and could have used a sweeter balancing flavor like vanilla or a malt bill with less char. Still pretty enjoyably overall, despite the coffee.

From the 375ml bottle, released at the brewery this past week. Waxed cap and, my goodness, the wax was a pain in the ass to get through and I almost died of thirst before I got it open. But eventually served in a tulip.

Pours a thick, pitch, motor oil black with the merest suggestion of chestnut-black highlights along the edges. A scant finger of cinnamon colored foam doesn’t really last long enough to get much of a look at and just leaves a thin creamy collar.

Warm, robust nose of fine, fresh-perked coffee, then gets sweet and creamy, like ice cream as it sits. A faint berry-like character in the background.

Taste is precisely what I smelled, sweet and creamy, good quality, strong-brewed coffee, and a subtle jammy, red berry flavour. Creamy and custardy going into the finish, less vanilla and more of a spicy, cinnamon-like, tongue-tingling bite at the end. There is a faint aftertaste of old coffee grinds, but it's a nice one.

Feel is dense and creamy, mouth-coatingly thick without being syrupy and with ample fine, gentle carbonation.

Overall, a fairly excellent hefty stout! It is thick and heavy without being syrupy, and sweet without being tacky or cloyingly sweet. I didn't find it to be super-complex flavor-wise but it is intense and enjoyable and without any real discernible flaw.
