A strong version of our Rauchbier, to warm your heart a little more during these last days of winter. This Rauch Doppelbock went through an extended lagering period; showcasing a balance of complex chocolate malt flavors and beechwood smoke.

250ml pour at the brewery.

Pours very dark, mostly clear, fairly large head. Collapses slowly, looks coarser as it settles. Smell is richly smokey, something grassy and nutty about it.

Taste is of course quite smokey, but it's not overwhelming. Fairly sweet, a little date, sme other sweetness besides the dates -- molasses, maybe? Nuttiness is still there, bitter like bark or nut paper.

Mouthfeel is quite dry. Overall, it's pretty good.

Appearance - The beer poured a dark brown color with an inch of tan head crowning the pour.

Smell - The smoke made for an attractive aroma with noted sweetness.

Taste - The beer had a full smoke taste with a light acidity following. The doppelbock provided a light sweetness toward the finish. The smoke lingered throughout the taste.

Mouthfeel - The smoke lingered because of the viscosity and modest carbonation of the beer.

Overall - I liked this a lot.

Canned 2/9/22; drank 3/5/22 @ the Yarchives.

Opaque black/brown appearance.

A violent pour yielded a HUGE, noisy tan head; decent lace.

Smoked ham & mild chocolate notes in the nose. Odd, but appealing!

Thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Smoked ham & milk chocolate flavors; rich cream notes on the finish. As this warmed, booze heat emerged.

DECADENT, over the top but somehow still traditional. This is no every day drinker, but it's interesting and very bold.

Pours a beautiful mahogany brown color with a creamy tan head. Absolutely gorgeous beer. The nose is smoky with caramel and a bit of chocolate as well.

The chocolate is more pronounced on the taste and complements the caramel perfectly, with the smoky flavor giving this an almost BBQ flavor at the back of the palate, which I didn’t expect. What a delicious beer this is.

The mouthfeel is full and a little crisp, which was nice because this most definitely does not drink like a 9.1% ABV beer. If there’s not a President of the Dovetail fan club, I humbly submit myself for the position because they brew world class lagers, IMHO.

date stamped 01/28/21
L: dark brown body with a tall & foamy tan head
S: smoked malt, caramel, peat, earthy hops
T: heavy smoked malt makes sure you know this is a rauchbier; toasty grain, caramel, burnt caramel, brown sugar, molasses, earthy hops
F: fuller body, ample carbonation, malt, hops, and smoke are all excellently balanced
O: I only got the one can of this in their “Pack O’ Smokes” mixed 4 pack. I’ll be buying more if I see it, but I might have to wait til next spring

Super dark brown with a finger of beige head. Smell captures the smoke wonderfully with complimenting toasted caramel, cherry wood, dry earth, and light herbs. Tastes as it smells, but with more flavors from the malt: caramel, earth, smoke joins licorice, slight bacon, and light cocoa. Feel is smoked and malty with wonderful harmony, great balance, medium-light bodied. Goes great with pizza. Would love this on a cool fall night

L - Dark, malt, near-porter darkness - light brown edge, good lacing with its 7.6% ABV. Good head for a few seconds.
S - Have you had their Rauchbier? Good, like a toned-down version of that; stick a nose into a glass that has just been over a campfire and you get the idea. Woodsy, malty smoke tones. Also clear on the
T - more of that woodsy campfire, malt goodness; roastiness as well, full flavor on the palate start to finish. Marvelous.
F - Great, not overly carbonated, still lively, gets better in the mouth as temp increases, this is good stuff people!
O - Another fantastic "rauch" from the Dovetail folks - they really know how to smoke 'em. !
