The 4th in our series of barrel house experiments. We took our Vienna Lager, added it to a barrel, and then added about 250mL of our spontaneous beer and let it do its thing for about a year.

Cellared a year and a half. Mostly clear bronze body with a finger of white head and thick lacing. Smell features brett, big peach, dovetail wild culture and yeast. Taste is met immediately with that dovetail wild culture and huge peach, caramel malts, yeast is harsher though with a hint of vinegar, lemon on the finish, but gets watery about halfway. Feel is thin, playfully sour with some light acidity, malts are far and wide the lead texture.

Dark orange, cloudy, loose bubbles fade to nothing.
A lot of Brett and THP overwhelm the aroma and taste.
Popcorn kernels, parmesan cheese, overripe fruit.
Low carb that ebbs away over time, lingering popcorn aftertaste.
Needs time to develop or maybe use in a blend.
Right now it seems a bit green and unfinished, or in a transitional stage.
March 2020:
Hearing good news that this has improved, will revisit.
July 2020:
First bottling, re-review. The rumors were true, the extra conditioning time was good to this beer. THP has faded some, it’s drier and has more depth to it.
Deep saturated amber orange, bright clarity, a finger of softly textured foam, some spotty lace clings to the glass.
Aromas has some oak, dill, and funky parmesan notes. Hint of lemon.
Taste is tart and juicy initially, dill and slight vinegar reminiscent of pickle juice minus the salt brine, with a dry oaky finish. Traces of citrus, mild popcorn kernel from THP, not distracting. Medium bodied with ample carb. It’s similar to X02 in terms of woody barrel character, but with a little more body and complexity than X02. Overall it’s good and worth a try, I just think maybe it was released too soon last year.
