Pours a cola-like brown/black with ruby at the edges and a short lived one-finger head.
Straight off the pour aromas are...well, not really there. A hint of roasted coffee comes through.

To start off the taste, it unfortunately follows the nose. There's more (roast coffee, black bread, some char), but still not a lot going on. Time to let it sit and warm up...

And we're back with round 2. After letting it warm for about 15 minutes, I now get milk chocolate and cocoa aromas along with coffee. With a strong swirl, earthy/grassy hops come out. For taste, the chocolate is now here along with some cola, but the main show is still roast, just more pronounced than when first poured. A little hop bitterness shows at the finish, but not much.

Medium carb with some bite, and surprisingly light bodied. The bite is a little annoying as it takes away from this being a nice easy drinker.

With just a little more nuanced flavor this would be a good beer. As is, it is pretty one-dimensional, but I'd rather that at it's low 4.5% than packing in more flavor at 6.5%.

Canned on 9/10/20; consumed on 11/4/20

Pours a jet-brown body with ruddy mahogany edges and is topped with just over a finger of uniform, creamy, pale khaki foam; solid head retention leaves a thin, frothy cap and a larger, creamy collar, while the walls of the glass are painted thoroughly with delicate, soapy rings of lacing.

Aroma opens with a striking note of charry roast accompanied by grassy hops upfront, slowly developing bakers/dark chocolate alongside spent coffee grounds firmly in the backdrop; hints of fresh toffee and malted milk ball invite a distantly sweet close for the bouquet.

Taste presents an almost relentlessly 'dark' profile, at first highlighting a cacophony of raw cacao, used coffee grounds, and black bread crusts beneath the heft of charred malt on the palate; a briefly impactful, semi-acrid roast peaks through the finish with a notable, grassy/floral/fruity hop accent, and a light milk chocolate exhale.

Mouthfeel shows a medium-light body with a moderate carbonation, dissipating with an edgy spritz across the mid-palate, where a fast-encroaching, moderate malty grit takes hold with a crispness before a charry, bitter, and relatively quick finish.

Roast-heavy, one-dimensional, and packing a bitterness maybe more suitable for a Black IPA, this Schwarzbier(?) does live up to its 4.5% ABV sessionability despite exploring some of the blunter aspects in the marriage of roast and hops; solid and consistent, though could use some refining for a bit more nuance.

16oz can - dated 2019/12/02 (see note on age in Overall) - poured into a flared stange at 40°F.

Pours a deep dark brown, sitting nearly black in the glass, save the ring of mahogany highlight at the base. Held to the light, about 1/4 of the liquid is visibly clear brown. Three fingers of loose, webby dark tan head slowly deflates in large pockets, leaving spots of lacing behind.

Nose: Rich malty aroma with malted milk balls, milk chocolate, a hint of char, barley, with some subtle fruity brightness and a hint of spicy hops. Fairly simple, though enticing aroma.

Palate: The beer greets the palate with moderately roasted malts, following the aroma pretty closely. Malted milk, milk chocolate, super nutty barley malt. Just before this starts tasting stouty, a punchy tang comes in, lending some lemon, minerality, fruity yeast, and some leafy hop character. The fruitiness fades quickly, but the hops quickly take on a resinous, spicy character, and then into the finish, we see some bitterness, some charred black malt, and then ultimately concluding with a huge malty nutty note, which lingers considerably.

Mouthfeel/Body: The beer is medium-light in body, with a slight richness from the nutty roasted malts. Despite its chocolatey flavour profile, there is little residual sweetness, and the beer is semi-dry. Effervescence is on the lower side, but it is not lacking, and does it's job. The hop character and blackened malts in the finish work to lend a dry, satisfying conclusion.

Overall: This is a particularly nice display of flavourful, easy-drinking dark ale. I'm extremely reluctant to call this an altbier, but regardless of its stylistic description, it's remarkably well-balanced, with no one aspect overpowering the beer, and coming together with some nuance.
*note: There is a very, VERY subtle skunky, almost cheesy stale yeast character that I know does not exist in fresh examples. It's almost ignorable, and doesn't show up until the beer gets warm, but it's clearly an effect of age. It doesn't factor into the review. Just drink fresher specimens if you can.
