Witch Meadow Black 2022 was aged in a combination of Buffalo Trace and Willet Bourbon barrels for a blended average of 20-months. With Witch Meadow Black 2022, as always, we split off a portion of the blend and infuse a new selection of adjuncts. This year we opted for a combination of crushed hazelnuts (no extracts here), toasted coconut and cocoa dusted toasted coconut.

500ml bottle served in a stemless, somewhat angular glass. 2022 vintage, batch #5, doesn't say "Black" on the label but reviewing it under Witch Meadow Black (2022) because the year and the ABV match and the label is super black, and there's a bunch of other listings that are similar but not identical. Anyway. Got it from @Roy_Hobbs in NBS BIF #18.

Pours black, even though it's not explicitly written on the label. There was a short disgruntlement of dark brown head on the vigorous pour, but it disappeared immediately. Smell is boozy, coconut, vanilla, tons of chocolate, molasses, maybe some burnt coffee.

Taste is coconut and vanilla up front, borderline too much coconut. Tons of molasses and vanilla. Quite clearly boozy. Maybe some chocolate syrup. Let's remove the maybe, there's definitely some chocolate syrup.

Mouthfeel is very thick, very rich, not hitting syrupy or sticky, but SUPER chewy. Overall, very nice beer.

500ml bottle with fancy flat black wax. Poured into Durobar Charente glass.

Batch #5. Vintage 2022.

Appearance: midnight black motor oil here. Very thin dark brown cap that drops to no head quickly. Big booze legs on the side of the glass. Glass staining of the beer glass without a doubt.

Smell: Chocolate, bourbon, & rye whiskey. Hint of coconut. Not smelling the hazelnuts, but this still smells divine.

Taste: Similar to the nose the primary flavors here are bourbon, rye whiskey, and chocolate. Mid palate you get a wonderful creamy hazelnut note and the rich coconut as well. Leather, tobacco, and light barrel char. These flavors are smooth and they play pretty well together. The finish has a spicy rye whiskey note and undertones of rich smooth bourbon; dry notes of oak and bakers cocoa. This is layered and complex. Really delicious barrel aged adjunct stout here.

Mouthfeel: medium full body here. Low and adequate carbonation. Big barrel presence without being too boozy. Sticky textured stout. This is definitely a sipper, but it's pretty darn smooth overall.

Overall: I was very impressed with straight (without adjuncts) Witch Meadow when I tried the 2021 vintage. Witch Meadow Black is just as good. Nailed the flavor of the adjuncts. The balance between adjuncts and barrel flavors is spot on. This is probably meant to be a barrel aged pastry stout, but the dry finish keeps this from becoming cloyingly sweet like most pastry stouts tend to be. Fox Farm Barrel aged stouts for the win. You don't have to convince me at all; this is a top tier stout.
