Late last year Goldfinger Brewing Company (Downers Grove, IL) debuted an exciting collaborative brewing project called American Zoigl. It started as a pair of beers made with our mutual lager buds Live Oak Brewing Company (Austin, TX) and continued on with the esteemed brewers Urban Chestnut Brewing Company (St. Louis, MO). The project has made its way to Salem, CT and we’re very proud to share our American Zoigl.

Following the established framework for the beer while bringing our own approach, we used a local heirloom corn variety (Wapsie Valley) in a cereal mash, barley from Valley Malt, whole leaf Crystal hops and American-grown Saaz hops. Marrying old and new world lager brewing methods, there’s a depth of flavor and character we just love in this beer - subtle corn sweetness, a mellow/rounded malt character and noble-like hops with a zippy, citrus side.

Pours lightly darkened gold; white head, not much retention; mostly clear with light chill haze.

Enticing nose, some citrus, hay, green grass, light floral and herbal, lighty swet cracker, bright, aromatic and balanced.

Taste has a unique flavor that I can only describe as rustic; cracker like but lightly sweet, ritz, whisp of toasted grain and husk, finish has an earthy bite, it’s grassy but very prickly.

Light medium body; some hop stickiness, punchy bitterness, it finishes clean; the light sweetness in taste dries out.

16oz can served in a footed pilsner glass. Canned on 03/13/24. Got it from @Roguer in NBS BIF #18.

Pours clear brassy gold, pretty big creamy head, visibly carbonated. Smell is grassy and lemony with a light biscuit dough background, some honeysuckle.

Taste is more floral but less specifically honeysuckle, sweetness, with a lot of grassy character. Bitterness builds up pretty quickly.

Mouthfeel is very light, very clean. Overall, very nice beer.

Pours a lovely, crystal clear burnished gold color. Thick, frothy off white head forms on the beer when it is poured before dissipating. A thin residual film remains on the beer along with rings of foam on the glass. Aroma has notes of cracker malts, some light dough and a touch of white bread. On top of that there are notes of honey, green grass, some light floral notes, with a slight peppery spicy note to it.

Taste follows the nose with notes of crackey malts, white bread, lemon grass, spicy, peppery hops, and some mild bitterness on the back end. It is a lovely American lager. Feel is light, crisp, kind of refreshing. Dry finish with moderate carbonation. It's the kind of beer you start drinking and all of the sudden it is gone.

Overall a lovely lager - exactly what I would expect from Fox Farm. Thank you Andrew for the beer - this did not dissapoint!

Excellent head production; decent retention, and nice lacing. Body is fairly lively, the color of burnished gold, and absolutely, perfectly crystal clear.

Wonderful and delicately fragrant on the nose: slightly floral, modestly sweet, bright, and balanced. Notes of honey, green leaves, cracker, white bread, pepper, and a touch of lemon.

Flavor follows. Up front, it's malty but fairly bitter and balanced; there's no excess sweetness. The sweetness comes mid-sip, with just a touch of corn, light toast, white bread, and a drop of wildflower honey. As the sip transitions to the back third, leafy green bitterness comes along and starts to prepare you expertly for the next sip. It's not a super dry finish, but it has a similar effect. Long slightly bitter aftertaste.

Tons of bite on the palate; highly carbonated. Fuller feel than expected for a sub-5% ABV lager.

One of the more aromatic and flavorful lagers from a brewer that excels at the game. This one is worthy of putting up there as an example of what one of the best lager brewers in the nation can pull off when they're near their best.

16oz. Can served in my Fox Farm dimpled mug. Pours a lovely translucent, orange-gold with a frothy, quarter inch cream-colored head embedded with tiny pinpricks. Nose expresses hints of corn and spicy hops. Taste follows nose with the addition of an earthiness hops presence at the finish. Mouthfeel is light in body with a bright, crisp, carbonation. Overall, a very nice American Lager. Another well-crafted beer from Fox Farm!
