Brewed in October of 2020, Beyond The Final Horizon spent a year aging in Four Roses bourbon barrels. The nose has notes of caramel, vanilla and oak along with a light, spicy hop & alcohol character. Lots of caramel, dark rum and toffee on the tongue is rounded out with flavors of vanilla and honey.

This is kind of an odd one. Up front I taste sweet apple and pear, then caramel, toffee, and strong whiskey join the fray. The finish is where this gets strange, I get an almost pez like candied fruit note. I can't say which color, never tasted anything like it in a beer before. There is a lingering bitterness, oak and leafy, piney hops. Pretty good overall.

Inexpensive enough for me to get six. Poured cold to a Glencairn, yields a murky copper color with a fleeting bubbly crisp off-white head. Nose comes across oxymoronically strong mellow from the bottle, i.e., Very noticeable, but its profile is delicate and crisp. First sips bring a strong barrel presence, followed by a hoppy, American style barleywine middle, and ending with a slightly English barleywine caramel note. I’ve never had Four Roses bourbon, so I can’t authoritatively comment on its absence or presence, but there is a distinct spiciness to this. Mouthfeel morphs a bit from medium to full bringing a long linger of apple pie spiciness, and a hint of honey. Alcohol has some bite, probably heightened by the strong fresh-white-oak barrel vibe I envision. After some time, the ABV Carrie’s more oomph than the 11.3% might infer. This might be the big sibling of Bones In Traction, as some notes are very similar. The Glencairn was probably the best choice of glass, as this drinks like a spirit sipper. As times goes on, my impression is that the brew is simple, but over time it really leaves a satisfying aroma and flavor.
