Was psyched to still be able to have this on Tuesday when it came out for draft on Saturday when I was away from town. I had already picked up my bottle but I wanted to try it. Beer description read, “Imperial Pastry Stout aged in Vanilla Extract Bourbon Barrels for 15 months and conditioned with triple the typical dose of Veracruz Mexican Vanilla Beans, heaps of Raw & Toasted Coconut Chips, and House Roasted Hazelnuts”

Was surprised it took me this long to track this beer down. Wasn’t happy about the Sept. 2 canned on date, but went with it anyway. Online description called for, “Bursting with notes of mango, papaya, and fresh apricot, this IPA will be a staggeringly effective countermeasure for the enduring heat. Stuffed with heaps of Mosaic and Amarillo hops, it’ll make for a pretty fantastic way to close out the summer.”

Poured a pitch black color with one finger of frothy khaki-tan head. No noticeable bubbles underneath the head. Excellent lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled vanilla, chocolate, coconut flakes, hazelnut, chocolate syrup, macaroon and marshmallow. Very boozy on the nose. (Smell - 4.50)

Tasted chocolate syrup, vanilla, coconut flakes, milk chocolate, hazelnut, macaroon and marshmallow. (Taste - 4.50)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. (Feel - 5.00)

Just a world-class stout. So damn good. (Overall - 4.50)

The 14.5% ABV is not well hidden here. The fusel alcohol on the nose stings the nostrils like Brian Fantana’s bottle of Sex Panther. As it warms, you can pick up the vanilla and coconut, but it’s very vague and soft. Flavor brings on a ton of alcohol, but it finishes with a good balance of sweetness, dark chocolate bitterness and vanilla fruitiness.
