A crisp, refreshing grätzer-style ale. Once popular in Upper Canada, grodziskie or grätzer-style ales like this vanished after prohibition. Oak-smoked wheat gives our Autumn Fyre its distinct fall flavour. Earthy and subtly smoky on the nose. Bright and vibrant. Notes of biscuit, vanilla and honey. Finishes exceptionally clean. 18 IBU

473 mL can, Day 11 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; no canning date and served slightly chilled.

A deliberately rough pour scared up about an inch of bubbly, soapy white head atop its golden orange-hued body; it faded within ninety seconds, leaving behind a thin collar and little else. Wheat, grains and doughy, biscuity malts on the nose, with minor notes of caramel, spicy hops, oak and smoke.

A nice, light, malt-forward ale with a very subtle smoked character that I found highly charming. Light caramel sweetness combines with a biscuity, bready malt backbone; smoked wheat comes through later on. Hints of oak, caramel and wheat husk round out the back end, dissipating into a mildly smoky, malty, persistent aftertaste. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that lightly prickles the palate; smooth mouthfeel with some slickness. Surprisingly crushable.

Final Grade: 3.75, squeaking out a B+. I am really impressed with the variety of beer in this Nita calendar: grätzer is one of the last styles I'd have expected to find in here, which made Skeleton Park's Autumn Fyre a fun surprise. I have practically no real experience with this obscure species of European smoked ale, but I knows what I likes. It drinks kind of like an amber lager, with smoked oak thrown into the mix - I feel like fans of Innis & Gunn would appreciate this. The smoke is pretty restrained IMO, but I suppose if you're really sensitive to smoked malts then this won't be your cup of tea - but if you enjoy smoke, or are simply curious, I'd recommend giving this a try.
