Brewed in collaboration with Fonta Flora, this Barleywine-style ale was brewed with a large percentage of heritage Bloody Butcher corn and aged in select bourbon barrels for 18 months.

Picked up a 12 oz can from the Appalachian Vintner 11-20-25 for $13.99. Canned 11-21-24; consumed 1-31-26. Cold stored since purchase.

Beer poured dark brown with a smaller tan head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is dark fruits forward, caramel, and bourbon.

Taste is toffee and caramel forward with some dates and prunes in the post sip aspirations. Malt base melds nicely with the barrel that lends some leather, heat, and balances along with hops that are in the background.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth but lacks viscosity for a high gravity brew.

Overall, O how i have missed you Jackie. Glad to have had this opportunity as you have been scarce lately!

12oz can served in a snifter. Canned 11-21-24 11:02

Appearance: Very dark brown letting little light through (just at the edges). Thin light tan head that died back to just a ring. Some small islands and strands of lacing noted that slide back down the glass and dissipated, as expected with something of this potency.

Smell: Bourbon whisky dominates, actually smells like bourbon whisky. Maybe a bit like a sour mash whiskey due to corn? Not picking up much else in aroma.

Taste: Definite rich malt that you would expect from a Barleywine, with a bit of a honey note, a metallic note towards the finish, some vanilla and bourbon notes, and even some nuts and maybe a hint of cherry. Some buildup of a lingering aftertaste though which wrecked my palate by the end of the glass. Complex to say the least.

Mouthfeel: Nicely thick, light carbonation, quite warming - almost hot with the alcohol.

Overall / Drinkability: A very interesting sipping barleywine. I think the only drawback was a buildup of a flavor at the finish that by the end of the glass, dominated everything I could taste. I suspect it was something from the barrel aging, but I can't put my finger on the taste either. Still, I enjoyed it, just a bit of a palate wrecker. Did I lollygag.....well, after the potency of this one, I can't say I'm thinking about work or something important, so the answer may be yes.

Look: It pours dark brown with a brown head. Head retention is good.

Aroma: It has a malty aroma featuring toffee and nuts. It also has some treacle like qualities with light whiskey notes.

Taste: It has a malty flavor with toffee and treacle. There is a maple syrup element with whiskey hints. There are background flavors of nuts and vanilla. There are some cherry and dark chocolate hints as well.

Feel: It has a full body on the chewy side. The finish is on the sweet side. It has smooth alcohol warming.

Overall: There are plenty of complex flavors here and they do work quite well together.

The Art of Lollygagging from Jackie O’s. Received from their website. 12 fl oz can, price unrecorded. Reviewed 25/04/25 (Review 3514). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on can bottom “CANNED B 11-21-24.” Stored in at 39 degrees F at home; served at 56.8 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature is 60.9 degrees F.
Appearance – 4
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), nearly opaque.
Body – Amber Brown (SRM 18), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, light penetrates only at the edges, honey.
Head – Average (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density, fizzy. It quickly recedes to a 0.00 – 0.05 cm broken bubble ring, sporadically fed by carbonation.
Lacing – None
Aroma – 4.25 – Blast of bourbon when the tab is popped. No yeast, no malt, no alcohol.
Flavor – 4.5 – Begins sweet with bourbon and barrels – minus barrel tannin bitterness but with some tannin flavor. Some dimethylsulfide, but well-balanced with the barrel flavors. No yeast, no hops. No alcohol (13.1 % ABV, according to the label). No diacetyl. Long-lived gastric warming occurs.
Palate – 4 – Full: creamy: soft carbonation.
Style: Follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA, sans roasted malt.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Whimsical corn label art – with the artist named! ABV and VOL values are switched on the label – oops! The bourbon aroma bursting from the open can quickly ameliorates to a less nose-hair singeing level and becomes quite enjoyable. Flavor follows aroma, so the corn and bourbon barrels meld into a warm corn whiskey-ish poundable drink. But DO NOT POUND these! This is definitely a sit-back-sip-and-enjoy drink. Leave the lawnmower alone.

12oz can served in a tulip. Canned on 11-21-24. Got it from @DIM in Stout/Barleywine BIF #2.

Dark cola color, small head that is dense and even. Smell is horehound, nuts, toffee, molasses.

Taste is boozy, dense fig and molasses, strong vanilla and wood, dark charcoal bitterness. Horehound, maybe some cola.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a little prickly. Smooth, syrupy. Overall, really nice.

Nearly matte black, on the edge of very dark brown, under a moderately short, fuzzy tan head.

Stanky, pungent, saturated oak meets caramel Cowtales contrasted by hints of pine resin and orange peel.

A semi-sticky but semi-dry finish of warming whiskey brings out a lightly peppery, almost hickory thread.

The pour was cola brown with a tight light tan head that left scant lacing
The taste is full of malty goodness, with a touch of corn - and not in a corn syrup sort of way.
Lots of caramel and butterscotch and dark fruits, no hops harsh/hard edge.
The feel is delightfully viscous, very much a barleywine feel.
OA, I had my doubts with this but was very pleasantly surprised. Good beer!

Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body is a dark brown with a small, thin white head. Very light lacing.

Aroma is a delightful mix of butterscotch and sweet bourbon. The former must come from the heritage Bloody Butcher corn used in brewing.

Taste features the barrel, a bit less sweet than in the nose. Notes of corn, caramel, figs and nutty malts in the background. A bit of earthy hop, but not much. The malts are the star here.

Mouthfeel is good, heavy and soft with tingly carbonation.

Cheers to Jackie O's for switching from 12.7oz bottles to 12oz cans. Jeers for keeping the price the same:rolling_eyes:

Anyway, the beer is great. Bright, light sweetness in the form of the innards of a butterfinger, honey, butterscotch, marzipan, and more. The barrel notes are big and bountiful. Jackie does it again.
