Turbid and uniquely silky, appearance is a sort of pastel red with no head but for a gel-like surface.

Unusually toasty, it has a nose of something almost burnt, while taste brings stonefruits (apricot, peach and maybe the plum), this unusual element gives off an odd bitterness here too. It at times seems a bit like chlorine...?

8 September 2020 - Beer #178

Price: $22.22 at Liquor Outlet Wine Cellars in Boonton, NJ

Appearance: 5 - head fizzled away immediately leaving a beautiful pinkish orange liquid.

Nose: 4 - musky and funky more than sour. The fruit is underneath the musk and funk.

Taste: 3 - super duper funky and very musky. Plenty sour, but that musk is intense. Some grape on the finish.

Mouth: 5 - thick and extremely effervescent.

Overall: 4 - something is off on the flavor, but this is a very interesting and not unpleasant offering. I continue to be intrigued.

Cheers!

Thank you thebeers for this
750 ml bottle, 2019, poured into a flute

A- A somewhat hazy bright red with a two finger pink head.

S- Tart, cherries, some blackberries, oak, touch of bourbon, mild funk, hints of grapes.

T- Tart, cherries, lemons, some blackberries, hints of bourbon, mild funk.

M- Smooth, crisp, light body.

O- A very nice and easy to drink sour. Not as complex as some of the other beers I’ve tried from The Referend but still very enjoyable.

Pours a very light yellow, very clear, with a quickly fading foamy head. Has a grassy, funky aroma with faint citrus and raspberry. Great funky flavor, starts with tart lemon /citrus, raspberry is in the background but very noticeable, grapes are faint. Crisp and pretty acidic, carbonation is perfect. Overall a fantastic funky beer.

Had on tap. Cherry red clearish body with a slight white thin collar. This is a berliner weiss because of the wheat base, but it basically got the lambic treatment. Smell has a bright and slightly sour bouquet of fruit: plum, cherry, apple, raspberry, grape, pear, and peach, all with an oak backing and some lighthearted funk. All the fruit in the smell and taste are very ripe, and bursting with flavor. Taste features the wheat a little more, and the funk is more nuanced, but the fruit, especially the plum, cherry, and raspberry star. Could be a little drier in the feel, but I thought the wheat and oak textures played well together as the base, allowing the tartness and slight acidity to play on the palate.
