First of all, I explain my style selection. UnTappd calls this a Golden; but it is more pale, even reflecting in the sun. This also could be a saison since GunWhale specializes in that style; but the ale is too clear and has coffee (an unusual additive for a saison.) So, I selected the BPA and chalked up the coffee to creativity. I hope you don't mind.
Hu'ihu'i Looks a pretty pale and clear, but I'm guessing the coffee deadens the foam. First, I Smell malt mildly wanting to become fruit and, then, an even milder waft of the Kona. Tastes are fuller, richer, refreshing, balanced. In my mouth, it is close to joy... my two favorite beverages from opposite ends of the day merging as one. (But at 6.5%, I can't kid myself about the coffee.)
As for the ale's name's derivation, it certainly seems Hawaiian; but I could not find it on Gunwhale's website.
As for my micro-review of Gunwhale, this seems like a smart way to start a brewery and make it grow fast. Three partners all with necessary business skills hire a master brewer. It has been almost five years and Covid has cramped them still into Orange County. But, they have all of California to distribute to. I bought this copy of Hu'ihhu'i from The City Beer Store in north Oakland... so Gunwhale has travelled that far. For my next ale from them, I will look for their saisons.
