Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Photon is our light and crushable American Pale Ale loaded with pacific northwest hops. It pours a very hazy orange, releasing well-blended notes of apricot, tangerine, peach, mango, and pineapple. It tastes of soft juicy tropical fruits, hop resins, and a hint of biscuit. A smooth rounded bitterness with a touch of dryness ensures you’re ready for the next sip. This drinking experience is further enhanced with a soft and billowy mouth-feel that has made this the go to ale for the EQ crew, especially when a productive day needs to follow a fun night.

Pours a yellow color. Great citrus aroma. Smooth mouthfeel - enough hops for taste but very smooth and not too bitter. Solid white head that lasts. Very drinkable beer and a best in class Pale Ale.

Ok, this was a weird dichotomy for me. I got a sample pour and saved it for last. I really thought it was a solid, floral, lightly bitter pale ale.

So I ordered a full pour. The review:
Looks damn nice (mainly the lacing), though it’s a bit more sparse than the short pour. Pale, dull orange/yellow/amber body.

A definite citrus, tropical nose with grave, grapefruit, and passion fruit involved. Taste brings a lot of these from nose to palate. Definitely not heavy, thick, or a trouble to get through, feel-wise. A little tart, perhaps, but fairly refreshing without being watery. I initially had the feel low, but I realized I like the lighter feel here, so I adjusted.

To be honest, as expected given my small pour sat to warm, warmth helps this beer in my mind. A bitterness (pithy mainly) builds and becomes more noticeable as it nears cellar temps.

Ok, not often I’d suggest an APA at 50° or above, but I’d be curious what others thought. Little more fruit tartness than I’d like, and and a surprisingly big difference to me based temperature. I rated between the two.

On tap, pours a very hazy orange. Huge white head, but kind of over-carbed tbh. Smell is tropical and resinous, but taste falls flat, with tons of not-great-tasting grain. The only hint of hops is in the bitter finish. Nah.

L - warming fireplace orange with a floofy head. Inviting.

S - lemon candy and grassy pineapple. Fresh and bright and tropical.

T - bright is a great descriptor. Light and gentle green citrus fruits a la tangerine, nectarine, lemon, and a hint of lime. Pithy pineapple and a gritty hoppy residue..ness. Gentle all around and crazy refreshing.

F - just as light as the flavor suggests. Low carbonation, but an overall energetic fluffiness. Well done.

O - this is a great post-beer beer. Light and refreshing with amicable citrus flavors that aren't too sweet, and far from too bitter.

Pours a hazy light orange with a very well retained inch and a half white head that left tons of lacing. Smells predominately of tropical fruits with a bit of citrus and malts. Tastes of peach, mango, sweet oranges, pineapple, some bready malts and just a touch of grass. Medium bodied and carbonated, slightly dry finish. Amazing beer at 4.8% ABV.

Hazy pale orange with a finger of bright white head. Decent lacing.

Creamy citrus in the nose with a little peach behind.

More peach-forward in the taste, still somewhat on the light side, with an earthy, tea-like quality added to the mix. Very little bitterness, with a lightly fruity finish.

Light bodied with strong carbonation.

The tea quality here isn't to my personal taste, but this is still a very solid take on a delicate, refreshing, NE-style pale ale.
