16 fl oz can nabbed at a beer store in New Orleans, Louisiana. Reviewed fresh (it just hit shelves). This appears to be a lower ABV/pale ale version of their IPA "Adjunct Integration."
5.5% ABV. "Pale Ale." "Vanilla, marshmallow, lactose, orange and lime zest." Community Juice Series.
Served cold into a stemless wine glass.
Pours a turbid dull orange body and a slightly frothy white head. Head retention is good (~8-10 minutes) but it's a drab looking brew all in all...its lack of filtration does it no favors.
AROMA: Fresh orange, lime, and citrus fruits are the first thing I notice. Actually, the marshmallow is surprisingly pungent and authentic...this really screams marshmallow without feeling fake or artificially flavored (judging by the aroma). Lime dominates the back end, bringing plenty of acidity and lime peel in addition to the more usual lime flesh. Zesty and spritzy, evoking lime juice and a grenadine-like lime syrup sort of vibe. Vanilla is present, though it doesn't evoke genuine vanilla bean.
The lactose/milk sugar is artfully disguised, lending sweetness when coupled with the 2-row/pale malts but never standing out.
A fresh and aromatic ale that seems to be better off for all its adjuncts & additives...I can't say that about many beers these days.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Adjuncts do take centre stage here, and while all of them feel genuine (not evoking artificial flavors or syrups or anything - save for the sticky lime), the focus on adjuncts & additives comes at the expense of hops - and this is meant to be a pale ale. The fresh orange and lime is lovely, but there's no citrusy hop profile for those flavours to complement, or if there is it gets buried beneath the louder additives.
I've had many an imperial stout that billed marshmallow as an ingredient, but this pale ale is the first marshmallow beer I've had where the flavour was actually evoked. I don't know that it does the beer any favors, though, and in tandem with the lactose it feels entirely unnecessary, imparting unneeded sweetness to a beer that should be emphasizing hop varietals and their concomitant bitterness.
Vanilla is present and feels mellow but not necessarily welcome in the mix.
I guess I just want more of a citrus and hop focus, and I don't see what the sweeter additives/adjuncts are bringing to the table.
Unnaturally smooth. Medium-bodied, wet, unrefreshing, perfectly carbonated, slightly sticky on the palate, coating.
OVERALL: This pale ale emphasizes additives & adjuncts at the expense of showcasing its hop varietals, and while it plays its titular gimmick well, it isn't much of a pale ale at the end of the day. I'm glad I tried it, but I do want my beer to taste like beer and my pale ales to taste like hops.
