This version, as the one in the picture here, logs in at 10% ABV, instead of the posted 10.5. At this level, it may not matter. What matters now is the sixteen ounces of beer sitting in a clear glass liter mug, just after exiting a pint can. The brew is dark apricot-amber, approaching brown. On top lays a just-off-white head, that's generous, without being overly foamy. Its aroma is starchy and of alcohol, maybe some yeast, which makes for a sweet smell. At first, there's a surprise. There is very little taste of the alcohol and what is there fits nicely into the overall. Also, although starchy and sweet, it isn't nearly as sweet as feared it could be. But, the hoppy bitterness isn't quite up to the starch, likely largely oats, or that little bit of yeast that comes through. Much of what isn't on the sweet side probably comes from the alcohol at the finish. That isn't to say that this isn't a good beer. It's very good. The mouthfeel is rich and smooth, with some decent glass lacing and a sustaining head to testify. Yes, it's toward the sweet side, for an IPA, but the amount of alcohol within tends to do that, especially when the beer is well made. It may not please the die-hard hop heads, but rare the beer that can deliver this much alcohol with this much taste and smoothness.
