Barrel-Fermented Dark Saison.

We used a Norwegian farmhouse strain of yeast, chocolate wheat & kilned coffee malts, and Callista & Hallertau Blanc hops to produce a perfect beer for this weather. Robust and round, pleasantly dry and very drinkable.

16 oz. can. Almost black with a khaki head. Smells of toasted malts, chocolate, bright acidic notes, and something just shy of smokey. Tastes of dry dark chocolate up front and much more strongly of the smokey flavor, but it isn't smoke. It's the meaty flavor you get from smoked porters. Herbal hops with a bit of grapefruit. Lightly tangy. I don't even know where this lands, but it's a nice departure. Not quite smoked, not quite farmhouse, not quite sour, but elements of all three.

From a can in Portland, OR. Did not know what to expect, but I liked it. The roastiness and malt of the dark ale are dominant. But there is also a whole other layer of saison notes that make this unique.

Dark coffee color. Weaker head. Mild smell. Curiously, it has a portion of the porter notes one might expect, given the color. The rest is largely saison.
Coffee been and hops. Guinness. Fairly good Belgian-style dark ale.

Poured from a can.

Appearance - Very dark brown body with very little head that reduces quickly to some small islands.

Aroma - Dark fruit, figs, some malts; mostly mild smell

Taste - Some smoke flavor, dried fruits, spices, some bitterness at the end

Mouthfeel - Lighter body, lower carbonation, some hoppy bitterness; very good mouthfeel

Overall - Nice beer, lighter on the palate than expected. Would recommend a try if given the opportunity.

Below are now blind notes:

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice black with about an inch of tan head. The nose immediately comes across as a German style dark beer. Tons of dark malts, dark chocolate, toffee, a touch of tea, tobacco, coffee, a roasty note, a bit of rye spice, and a subtle layer of dark fruit. Very nice.

The taste is a bit sweeter than I had expected. Layered on top of the roasted malts is some honey and more dark fruit. Figs, a strong earthy taste, a touch of molasses, dark bread, smooth malts, oak, and a hoppy note on the back end. Really interesting. Not a classic German taste, but I'm still going with a Dunkel or something along those lines.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice mix of sweet and bitter on the aftertaste. ABV seems to be around 5 or 6%, I think...

Opaque dark brown body with a dark tan head. Dark grains lead both the smell and taste. In the smell I get charm, leather and earth with a hint of burnt caramel. Taste has a foundational layer of mulled dark fruit that pair nicely with the grains, earth, touch of smoke, faint leafy hop bitters, and roast accent. Feel is medium bodied, smooth and more yeasty than expected, smoky too, want some more dark or grainy depth though. Paired great with vikings valhalla

16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated 10/20/20. Another gift from @mr-jj, also probably purchased from Tavour.

Pours black with about a one finger head that fades and leaves a skin with a few clumps. Smell is roasted grains, light funk, a little grass. Fairly mild.

Taste is also fairly mild, mostly roasty, moderate sweetness, still has a little bit of funk that's hard to really detect under all the roasty flavors, maybe it has some anise or burnt flavor. The word "meaty" might apply here, too.

Mouthfeel is medium, fairly still, slightly filmy. Overall, not bad.

Dark, mahogany brown body, clear; thick and frothy head, creamy and sticky. Fine roasted grain smell; char. Light bitter chocolate taste; very mild bitterness; hazelnut. Medium body; smooth and silky on the palate; begins mildly sweet yet finishes with a moderate dryness.

I easily could see this as a fine brown ale. The beer comes across well-rounded and has a fine overall flavor to it.

Dark Norwegian style ale, brewed with kveik yeast.

I gave this a vigorous pour into an imperial pint glass. Comes out a dark brown, with a creamy foam cap.
The aroma has some understated roasty notes, as does the sip, although there’s also a curious ... tart? Character, almost grapefruit like, that’s not so much out of place as just unexpected, lending the beer more of an unrefined, rustic feel. it’s surprisingly creamy, and warms well. What a curious beer.

Brewed with Norwegian kveik yeast, which is a high temperature bug. The result is a hazy, dark, and grainy brew. Plenty of pale beige foam in the tumbler. Mouthfeel is sudsy and light bodied, but full of malty flavor. It's slightly sweet, some caramel, and lots of roasted malt.

There's just a touch of hops which taste herbal and inconsequential. Just a hint of bitterness. Long nose of burnt oatmeal and chestnuts roasting. Quite interesting, but it probably needs candle light and something roasting on a spit. From the 16 oz can purchased at Healthy Spirits in San Francisco.

Batch 3. Canned 12/12

It is a very dark brown/chestnut color and ever so slightly transparent when held up to the light. It has a moderate tan head that leaves a thin film on top.

I smell a lot of chocolate, a grape jelly like fruit, and some toasted dark bread, like rye or pumpernickel, and a light char that you would get from a porter.

The initial taste has a lager like yeast sweetness. There is a very prominent toasted dark bread crust, some cocoa like chocolate, and dark sweet berries before it rounds out with a little bit of peppery orange flavored citrus, some floral hops, and a lingering burnt coffee grounds. The aftertaste has a solid bitterness and is a bit pithy.

The body is on the lighter side, but it has enough fullness to roll of the tongue with a touch of creaminess. Definitely some oily resin on the finish. The label says it’s an easy-drinking beer. I concur.

I haven’t had many beers made with Kveik, but this one is really good. And unique. It’s hard to find something to compare it to. It really has qualities of a Brown Ale, a Dunkel, an American Porter, and a European Dark Lager. I really like this one and would highly recommend it. Thanks @lingenbrau!
