Sulla TerraSulla Terra
Notes: Bourbon, Whiskey, and Maple Bourbon Barrel-Aged English Barleywine. Sulla Terra is Italian for "Upon the Earth" and is our first blended Barleywine expression. As we do with Derivation, our Imperial Stout series, we are brewing multiple Barleywine recipes to age in a variety of barrels. A blend of two unique English recipes, aged in three different barrel types, the Sulla Terra 2019 blend was spearheaded by brewer Brian Ivers and exemplifies what we believe to be an exemplary take on a Barrel Aged English Barleywine.

Burnt dark brown to black with a short but fluffy tan blanket that recedes to nothing but a silky black surface.

A sharp, sweet heat is amplified by a prickly carbonation, which delivers a mild maple that more readily unveils molasses. Caramelized fig then takes hold, with accenting notes of toffee transitioning into fresh, leafy cigar tobacco and hints of leather.

The smooth, medium but somewhat syrupy body finishes semi-sticky. Its whiskey influence is peppery and spicy, warming and even skirting too hot, albeit numbing on the tongue. There are even notes of red wine tannin at times, which helps to dry it out and make it a little less sticky, but it's also a little thinner than I expected.

5oz draft pour at the cellar into a snifter. appearance is dark brown with a light brown foam ring around the outside of the glass. smell is maple sweetness with a prominent whiskey sting. some darker fruits and a hint of chocolate become more noticeable as it warms. taste has much more chocolate to it than the nose. dark fruits, whiskey and maple sweetness. mouthfeel is full, lower end carbonation. a really fantastic barleywine. nice chocolate and maple flavors melding with the typical dark fruit and figs associated with barleywines.

Poured from the bottle into a stemmed tulip. Nice tan head, pretty coffee color. You get the barrels on the nose, sweet booze. Also some dried dark fruits. Again you get the barrels on the sip, maple bourbon and some heat. I'll be interested in how the bottle mellows. Hopefully will have a chance to try others in the series. Love the idea of different blends. HR from the fellas at SP/Shared.
