Labatt Blue LightLabatt Blue Light
Notes: Labatt Blue Light was introduced in 1983 as a lower-alcohol, lower-calorie version of Canada’s most popular brand. Blue Light uses specially selected North American aromatic hops and the same strain of lager yeast as the one used to produce Labatt Blue. The result is a crisp, clean and delicately balanced beer, with a slight sweetness and citrus-like hop character.

I live in California so this beer is pretty hard to find. Almost near impossible really. Anyways after having a few 6 packs, it's right in the sweet spot. It's not overly bitter or sour tasting at the end like Bud or Miller. Malt comes through clean, hops shine through lightly, and the beer finishes dry. It's a really enjoyable beer and a good overall light beer. I dont get the hate. You're reviewing a light beer, not an aged stout or an IPA. You're reviewing a light F'ing beer!

(24 oz can, code A29927, 'Let's Go Flyers' branding; purchased cold... poured into 28 oz mug)

L: polished-clear, gold liquid; tall build of explosive, crumbly white foam... keeps a collar but doesn't lace

S: mildly spicy apple peel overtone, subtle soapy-perfumy note; bit of a musty dough in the background... fair potency overall

T: good bit more slightly-sweetish cereal grain flavor than the smell lead on; the finish drops away, malt goes diluted, while that vaguely apple-y spicy (clove) phenol lingers... in subsequent sips, the spice fades and a dry, delicate, doughy malt rises and settles in... lovely dryness all the way through, just a bit too skewed toward the faint musty spice

F: light-bodied, softly foamy texture; silky wave rolling through... rather heavenly caress

O: comparing this to my review of regular Labatt Blue, I seem to prefer this lighter expression, assuming it's a similar recipe just scaled back... I've tried a relative crap-ton of light lagers lately, and this is one of the better ones (1465)

Labatt is another pretty mainstream beer that is served in most bars and carried in most places that sell cases of beer. Nothing wrong with it. One of those beers that I would definitely not sought after but would drink if it was the only thing around. Easy to drink a few while out on the golf course on a hot, sunny day.

24 Oz Can poured into glass
Look - mainly clear pale yellow appearance as expected. Decent foam head and some glass lacing
Smell - aroma is lots of grains, i don't know if this has corn in it but it just has a general grains, a touch of hops.
Taste - tastes fresh, but has a stale aftertaste. It is obviously very drinkable and watery. There is a minimal amount of flavor, some mineral qualities maybe from the hops but absolutely no bitterness, not too sweet either. It just sort of goes down the hatch. Nothing to really pick up in terms of flavor. Carbonation is high.

Overall, a very light beer that lacks flavor. It's not bad if you just want something to pound but there are better options..
Grade is a C+

Still one of my favorites in the light beer category. This one is a bridge gap between miller lite and bud light, this stays in the pocket which is snug in the middle.

L: brilliant light gold permeated by streams of rapidly rising bubbles under a 1" frothy white cap with fair to poor retention

S: smells of light grains, light floral hops, light corn and a very faint hint of DMS

T: slightly sweet with a light carbonic bite and fairly neutral flavors with faint hops and a crisp finish with traces of slightly sweet apples and corn

F: very light body and very high carbonation with traces of an acidic tartness from the carbonation

O: has slightly more flavor than an American light lager but the distance between this beer and bottled water is not great

Good light Canadian beer. Not heavy on much of anything so you can throw them back pretty easily. I get it every now and then. Nice light beer to just settle back and relax with after a day of yard work. Cheers.

24 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 7/26/2017. Pours crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, corn, white bread dough, light biscuit/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. A bit fruity aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with pale malt/corn and mild earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, corn, white bread dough, light biscuit/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Very mild herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, corn, white bread dough, light biscuit/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness of pale malt/corn and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium-high carbonation and light body; with a very smooth, fairly bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is okay. Really watery feel, but not bland on flavors. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4%. Overall this is a very solid light lager. All around good robustness of pale malt/corn and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink. Clean malt/corn flavors and mild earthy hop balance. Solid barley presence, not too heavy on the adjuncts. A nicely enjoyable offering for the style.

This beer pours a super light golden color that looks like a beer cut with water. The head is 3 fingers, fluffy and foamy. Retention is actually fairly good and there is a little bit of spotted lacing.

The smell is almost non existent. There is a hint of grain and literally nothing else.

Taste is the same. Grainy throughout with some corn and then some weird off flavor on this finish that reminds me of cardboard.

Feel is super light and watery. Easy drinking, but then again so is water.

Overall gross. I can do some AALs and light beers from time to time, but not this one. And to top it off they screw you out of .5 oz as their bottles are only 11.5 oz.

As light beers go, this one is pretty decent. Pours slightly darker than most lights. You get a bit of a hoppy taste in the Initial mouthful. Goes down real easy, but what would you expect from a beer w/blue in the name.

Billed as a "Canadian pilsener."

CAN: 12 fl oz. Standard pull-tab. A six pack ran me $6.99 plus tax and deposit in NYC. Blue label.

Per 12oz serving: 112 kcal. 7.9g carbohydrates. .9 grams protein. 0.0g fat.

Brief notes below:

APPEARANCE: Pours your standard off-white head and clear clean body. Pale copper in body colour, bending a bit darker than most beers in the pilsener style (or light lager category).

Looks inoffensive. There are no egregious flaws or obvious faults. Very innocuous in appearance.

AROMA: Cereals and pleasant graininess greet the palate. Corn adjunct is evident, but it doesn't seem like a syrupy or sweet lager. No evidence of the Cascade hops is present whatsoever. Pilsner malt is there in the background, behind creamy notes. Yeast profile is clean and ester-free.

Aromatic intensity is average. I find no off-notes; it's not metallic or skunky like many beers in the category. Pleasant enough for an adjunct pilsener.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Slightly creamy, with a grainy taste and subsidiary notes of pilsner malts, cereals, and corn adjunct. Not sickly sweet, but it's definitely a bit out of balance. The Cascade hops they love to advertise don't come through at all flavour-wise, unfortunately. A little grassy.

I find no off-flavours, but the high sweetness for a pilsner will annoy fans of the style. Even disregarding it as a pilsner and focusing on it as a beer in the "light beer/light lager" category, it's still got balance issues - but I will note it isn't syrupy or watery like many budget beers in this category (or similar - e.g. malt liquor).

Still, it's rather thick and full-bodied for a beer billed as a light lager, and it's pretty devoid of flavour. Smooth and wet, but unrefreshing.

OVERALL: If we're being fair, it's better than many beers in the category, but U.S. drinkers will find lesser-priced better brews a preferable choice (Trader Joe's' budget beers, Ballantine XXX, and random Polish and German imports are all cheaper and superior). When in Canada, I'd definitely sooner buy Lucky Lager. Still, I think many are being harsh on this merely for its style and status as a so-called "macro." Really dive into budget light lagers/pilseners and you'll find far worse fare than Labatt Blue Light. That said, it's not a beer I'll ever seek out again, and while it's drinkable I couldn't recommend it to anyone either for quality or for price.

04/04/17 2nd impression:

Riddled with DMS off-flavour. I'm shocked I missed it in my previous review. Painfully simplistic otherwise, but I've had worse. Mouthfeel is a mess - oddly thick (not what one wants in a beer in the light lager category).

The younger brother-Labatt. Oh dear. as a Western New Yorker, I actually hope to see the Labatt label when I attend a party/event, it beats some of the other options. But when you see the Light printed on there, it's probably better to DD. Yeah it's beer, I guess. Yeah it tastes better than Bud Light. But it's still a watery mess, I guess with a better hops profile than the rest.

12 oz bottle, some coded bottling information on the bottleneck. Acquired a single bottle from my neighbors. "Canadian Pilsener" No abv listed.

Poured into clear tulip-ish stemware.

A - Pale gold with a finger of thin wispy white head that goes down quick. Good clarity, with apt carbonation. Minor frothy lacing. Has a good classic draft beer appearance to it. Looks okay.

S - Nose has next to nothing: minor notes of dusty cooked cereal grains, and little else. Hops? I don't know. One of the most void of aroma beers I've ever had.

T - Taste is about as inoffensive as the nose, if a couple steps up: a sweetened husky / corny / grainy flavor. Notes of sweetened cooked corn and cream, sweet & grainy, with minor herbal earthiness present. (Hops?). Very husky / corny stuff. Certainly not the worst light adjunct lager out there; it outdoes many of the bigger more popular brands.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, creamy, grainy, husky. Light-bodied and easy drinking stuff.

Overall, a seriously underrated beer in the realm of cheap shitty macro lagers. Definitely rivals many of the bigger more popular brands like Miller Lite and Bud Light in terms of taste. In that aspect, recommended for what it is.

First off Labatt Blue Light is my go to beer. I love this stuff. Overall I am trying to keep and open mind compared to higher end micro-brew beers, that I have recently started enjoying. This beer was out of a can. I have noticed a taste difference in the past between bottled and canned versions of this beer. (Bottled is always better, right?)
Look-It's a light colored beer. The beer had a big head that took about 5 minutes to dissipate.
Smell-The smell of this beer is not all that pleasant. It smells like malt, bread, and hops. The hops seem more noticeable the more and more I smell it.
Taste- It is a light tasting beer overall. It tastes of corn malt and very light hops. It's an incredibly smooth beer. It's definitely watery but what do you expect from a light name brand beer. It's a great tasting light beer.
Feel- It's a great drinking beer if you plan on drinking 6+. Good beer for just about any day.
Overall- It's an easy drinking beer that is easily comparable to a bud light or coors light. It is not a bottom of the barrel beer, but it's not expensive. Overall it's a great bar beer and it's one of the top ones on my list.

Another bland cereal lager, but with fewer calories. Yea! Otherwise it’s watery with just a hint of flavor. Not sure why these are so big in the States... When visiting the mother-in-law, this is what I get.

On tap (and in cans) at the BB&T Center in Buffalo, where it is easily the most accessible beer.

Labatt always struck me as Canada's Budweiser--not necessarily because of popularity and market position, but it just had a similar-tasting grain bill and nearly identical bodies. I don't dislike macros, but Bud for me is a distant third behind Coors and Miller, so I don't get it very often. Ditto Labatt, which falls squarely behind Molson and Moose Head.

And, true to form, Labatt Light tastes quite similar to Bud Light: very fizzy, very watery, with just a mild push of cereal sweetness to keep you from confusing it with seltzer. It's far too tame to be offensive, but certainly nothing I'd ever seek out to drink.

My apologies to Coors Light. All these years, I've sworn that it was the wateriest beer imaginable. Turns out I was wrong, and the true King of Nothing Award should go to Labatt Blue. It's not *bad* in the regular sense, but it's just not really there.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass at the Taco Mac in Douglasville, GA. The beer has a clear faint yellow color with a thin tiny white head. The aroma is corn and water?. The flavor is a weak watered down beer flavor. Not a good beer.

A: The beer is crystal clear light yellow in color and has a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts are present in the nose—rice seems to stand out in particular.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of adjunct malts with notes of rice and hints of corn. Faint bits of sweetness are perceptible.
M: It feels light-bodied and quite watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer goes down easily, but only because it is mostly water and the adjunct flavors aren't too strong.

During a hurried stop at a supermarket on my way home, felt like picking up an inexpensive 24 oz. beer. I had bought Blue Light years ago before I discovered craft beer. Paid .99 for it, and am not going to rate it against a $14.99 4 pack beer.

We all know what light beers look like, so I won't bother with that. I did get a weird soapy taste with the beer. Flavor was below average, and disappointed me even at the .99 price point. While not a horrible beer, will not buy again anytime soon, maybe in desperation someday.

Looks clear and clean like any adjunct. Smells like nothing. Tastes like most other in its class but a little more funk. Standard carbonation.

If I'm session drinking with friends I'm not opposed to drinking macro adjunct beers occasion. But even then, this would be low on my list of said beers.

Not sure why everyone hates this beer but it's probably because I am a woman that I love this beer so much. It is light and flavorful. Could drink this anywhere, anytime. Easy to drink and doesn't make me feel as full as other beers. Would not recommend eating this with food since I don't think it would bring out many flavors. Perfect for tailgating or spending a day watching sports at an arena. Would highly recommend this for women.
