Appearance: a nice lupulin-pollen hazy yellow. The head is composed of white microfine bubbles that fade very quickly to near nothing.
Aroma: buttery (almost diacetyl-like) and melon. Sweet smelling. The malt comes through and the sweetness is highlighted.
Flavor: totally unexpected from what the nose would suggest. The hops are dry and somewhat generic at first, but not in a negative way. They hops then transition into overripe melon (cantaloupe and honeydew). This beer improves noticeably as it warms even slightly. This beer is better on the cooler – not cold – side of the thermometer. The less desirable flavors disappear. Late in the finish exists a hint of fennel/licorice: more of a suggestion than actual present flavors.
Mouthfeel: medium-medium. On par with expectations.
Overall: this is damn solid. The hops are super flavorful contributing pronounced sweet melon flavors. At first, this beers seems too sweet, but as it warms anything downside characteristics blend well, and the beer becomes very well balanced. I would buy this beer again. One of OR’s better IPAs that I’ve tried to date. My one recommendation is to let this warm slightly before drinking.
