A bit disappointing. This is an attempt to hold together British and American traditions of IPA brewing and falls between two stools. The lack of dry hopping or even late hopping means that there is little of the aroma NA drinkers might expect - and the bittering is a little thin.

Light hops on the nose. Wafts of caramel. Lighter in bitterness more malt, and sweet in the taste. Good to try but not overly nemorable.

Canned from the LCBO.

Dark amber orange colour. Not pale at all.
For IPA tastes more malt and booze than hops and fruits. Smells like a sweet porter mixed with apple cider. Feels like a strong beer.

A: Likely due to being a bit shaken up my pour had a substantial head that eventually subsided to a spotty covering with some lacing. Translucent medium amber colour.

S: Very faint must malty smell, not very good or bad.

T: A more pronounced toasty malty flavor that is not too dry. Some sweet caramel roastiness. Light bitter spice. Pleasant mild aftertaste. Not really getting any citrus notes .

F: Medium carbonation, a little drying.

O: Nice deep concentrated flavour, it's not very diverse. I'm not sure "hints of citrus" is the best description for it.

473 ml tallboy can purchased from the LCBO for around $3 CDN.

Appearance - Clear, amber colored beer with high carbonation. Pours a finger and a bit of loose white head that recedes moderately quickly and leaves behind a couple nice rings of lacing.

Smell - Not a huge nose, but grapefruit and something a little sweeter (mango maybe) make it to the nostrils.

Taste - Middling bitterness, some substantial malt presence and a dose of bitter and dry earthy hops. Fruit is less apparent here although the grapefruit kind of transitions to pine needles.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, a touch syrupy, carbonation is medium but soft giving it a slightly lighter feel. Very dry finish.

Overall - A decently made India Pale Ale, American Pale Ale or Industrial Pale Ale (as it's been coined here), whatever you want to call it, the beer is well made, tasty but not standing out from an ever more crowded Ontario beer scene. Worth a try, but unlikely to wow.

Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Nov 27 2016 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a cloudy orange-amber colour, with two fingers of airy, bone white-coloured foam situated atop. Good head retention, lasting beyond the ten minute mark; it wilts unevenly, with a mesa-like formation jutting up in the middle as the edges seep away somewhat more quickly than the center. Beautiful lacing - this beer looks the part, but appearances can be deceiving. Nothing of too much interest on the nose, which features coarse grains, bready malts and caramel sweetness mixed in with earthy, herbal hops and a slight note of muddled, indistinct citrus fruit.

The taste follows after the aroma, with a near-proportional blend of pale malts and hops. Grainy notes come through at first, with some bready, caramelized malt sweetness followed by muddled grapefruit and an earthy, dirty bitterness towards the finish. There's some acidity on the back end that I can't quite put my finger on; it kind of clashes with the rest of the profile, which ends on a bittersweet note. Dirty, weedy hop flavours linger on into the aftertaste, fading after a few seconds pass. Medium weight, with moderately low carbonation levels that gently prickle the palate, resulting in a mostly-smooth, kind of slick mouthfeel. Not a challenge to knock back, but I'd be lying if I said I were thrilled with this.

Final Grade: 3.55, a middling B grade. Lock Street's Industrial Pale Ale probably won't be raising too many BA eyebrows. I like the malt bill, but the hops aren't very interesting or assertive, and overall this brew doesn't do much to distinguish itself in a marketplace that is increasingly crowded with pale ales. Closer to an APA, IMO - but the line separating APAs from full-fledged IPAs is blurry to begin with, so I won't climb down that rabbit hole any further. A fairly forgettable outing, though should I come across a fresh can (i.e. closer to 1 month old, rather than nearly 3) I will more than likely give this one another look.
