A red American IPA with classic C hop aroma. Bready and toffee notes balance the fruity hops with a touch of roast and a medium full body.

16oz can served in a pint glass. Can is dated 1/26/26. Bought it at the brewery a couple hours ago.

Pours a dark reddish brown, clear with the light behind it, big fluffy head that settles slowly and leaves clotty residue. Plenty of carbonation. Smell is pine resin and caramel malt and toffee, singed biscuit bitterness. Some grapefruit rind and citrus pith.

Taste is in the same path. Leans into the resin bitterness, adds in a bit of woody tannins. Mild bark, bready sweetness. Softer and more welcoming than it smells.

Mouthfeel is smooth, soft, airy. Very nice beer. First time I've reviewed it, but it's one of two beers I seek out whenever I'm in Albuquerque.

Enjoyed on tap at the new Steel Bender taproom at the Albuquerque Sunport.

Look:
Brilliant red-orange body with persimmon highlights and superb clarity. The head of thick tan foam lazily compresses to a clumpy skin that loads the glass with lacing.

Smell:
The nose is spicy with orange peel, pine resin, hints of caramel and cherries, and earthy undertones.

Taste:
The flavor has a nice toasty malt intro, not too sweet. Citrus joins quickly with orange oil and a splash of juice. Finishes with deep caramel, a bit of roasted malt, pine, earth, and lingering caramelized orange notes. Bitterness is assertive but won't melt your face.

Feel:
Medium-heavy body that's somewhat sticky and mouth-coating, with emphatic carbonation that scrubs the palate clean for the next sip.

Overall:
Red Iron does an admirable job of balancing huge malt and hop presence into a beer that ends up big and chewy yet drinkable. Would drink again. If they sold cans here I'd bring some home tonight.

12oz can poured into a Duvel tulip. 10/01/19 stamped on bottom of can. Presumably the born on date, so it's about a month old.

Appearance - Pours 2 finger tan head with decent stick and retention. Clear mahogany body, but very dark to the point of near-opacity. 4.5

Smell - Dark coffee, bread. Roasted nut. Soy sauce. Some citrus. 4

Taste - Very bold. Like barleywine boldness. Dark, bitter, woody grass. Alcohol. 4

Mouthfeel - Harsh and astringent. Solvent-like. 2.5

Overall - Not an easy drink. Harsh and heavy handed. But not necessarily poorly crafted. Just makes sure you're looking for a challenge. 3
