Got this from hopsolutely this past summer
From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
Black label and black wax
APPEARANCE: Pitch black pour yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, mocha dark tan head with very good retention. Pitch black body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a solid wisp and clings to the glass all over. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving lots of lacing on the glass. Really good looking, just like the BA version.
SMELL: Roasted malts, dark chocolate, cream, hints of coffee and some leather character as well. Quite roasted with some tobacco as well. Medium strength.
TASTE: Milder flavors of roasted malts, leather, tobacco, chocolate and some cream as well. A decent dose of bitterness and tobacco at the swallow, moving into a bolder finish of roasted malts, tobacco, leather, some dark chocolate and roasted coffee bitterness lingering on the palate. Plenty of roasted and bitter character here.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, a little lighter in weight, goes down fine and finishes a touch mouth-coating. Some decent bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: This is solid stuff. The look is especially good and the aroma and flavor, while somewhat milder perhaps, are enjoyable enough. I would say that the bourbon barrel aged version is a little more impressive perhaps, but regardless, this is an enjoyable imperial stout that is well worth checking out if you get the chance. I’m glad I did. Thanks again, hopsolutely! Appreciated, as always.
Note: I had another bottle of this in 2023 and it had improved significantly. I'd probably put it a full point higher now at 4.5. It really was excellent. I highly recommend drinking it now if you have one.
