look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 4
Appearance: Poured with a solid thumb of head that retained well but did not lace. The body is an opaque deep, dark brown with small bits of white particulate, which the brewer did identify as chocolate icing, so a bit of leeway here.

Smell: Unsurpringly, like sweet, rich, chocolate cake. Chocolate, sugar and Vanilla are by far the dominant notes with bits of coffee and whisky malt in the background. Potency is there and didn't need warming.

Taste: Certainly as advertised, it takes like extremely sweet chocolate cake that's got a bit of an odd funk to it. The kind you'd buy in a plastic clamshell at a grocery store that has that weird blue colored icing trim, and multi colored confetti dots that you know shouldn't throw the flavor off, but somehow does. What's also kind of strange is you also get some whisky out of the experience that marches in step with that weird sugar. It's unique that is for sure, but it's a bit out there.

Mouthfeel: Once again, as advertised, as the carbonation of the beer coupled with..something gives it a consistency that comes across as creamy, but not. Kind of like icing on a cake is sort of like whipped cream, but not. There's not a lot in the way of transitioning, I mean it's chocolate cake that turns to a bit of a whisky note.

Drinkability: Well it drinks like a meal and thick like a good stout should be, but in this case the meal is an entire chocolate cake. I mean there is no question this is a desert beer so it's not the most refreshing thing you will find. That said, this was brewed to emulate chocolate cake, and in that, it's a success.

Final Thoughts: This was an anniversary beer Merit brewed, and it was nice to see them do something interesting that is for certain. This really is a great one off, but I wouldn't want to drink this on a regular basis. I mean a desert beer is a good thing once in a while, but this is such a desert beer mimicking chocolate cake, it gets to the point of me asking "Why don't I just get some chocolate cake?"
