473 mL can, Day 5 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; dated Nov 12 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a dark cola brown colour with glints of reddish burgundy when held to the light; rising to the surface is one finger of loose, soapy, beige-tinted head that settles off within two minutes, tops. A narrow band of lace clings to the glass above a tight, creamy collar; a filmy cap also lives on. Understated aroma of roasted malts, coffee and toasted nuts, with suggestions of cocoa and ash.
It's a boilerplate session stout; more akin to traditional dry Irish vs. the English-style. Bittersweet flavour proifle with notes of burnt grains, bready wheat, medium roast coffee and cocoa. Roasty finish, followed by a dry aftertaste. Light in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some spritz to this stout's smooth, slightly thin mouthfeel. Good drinkability, but without any flair.
Final Grade: 3.67, a B grade. Vimy Stout isn't exactly an unforgettable experience, but if you're looking for a light, roasty, bittersweet tipple then this might be just what the doctor ordered. I'd buy this once in a while if it were available locally, especially during the winter months.
