In České Budějovice, Budějovický Budvar (otherwise known as Budweiser Budvar or Czechvar in North America) and its original Ležák has been a constant source of inspiration here at Godspeed. After many journeys to the brewery over the years, it’s fair to say their philosophy, their brewmaster Adam Brož along with their former brewmaster Josef Tolar, and - more than anything else - their delicious 12° beer, have pushed us to redouble our efforts when it comes to producing Czech-style lagers of quality and distinction.

Enter Bůh Originální Ležák (4.6% abv) Original Czech Pale Lager, our painstaking homage in liquid form. Using a double decoction mash process, 12 week lagering time, 100% whole cone Saaz hops, and speciality-sourced floor malted pilsner malt, Bůh (meaning God) is our most elegant lager to date. On the nose, it’s all gentle Saaz spice aromatics that play into a delicate malt driven flavour and softened, natural carbonation. This particular pale lager is a study in restraint, providing an elegant canvas for these impeccable ingredients to shine.

Had on lukr tap. Picture pefect clear golden pour with a full white head, tons of lacing. Grassy hops permeate the aromas of fresh bread, honey, flowers, cracker, and lemon peel. Taste is much the same, bread has some defined crust which really bonds well with the czech hops. Feel leans hoppy in airy Czech yeast matrix, with decent crispness given the soft yeasty grip on the palate. Make me think of having CPL in Prague, wonderful!

On tap at The Sheffield in Brighton, NY.

This one pours a clear golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like freshly cut grass, crusty bread, and lemony and flowery hops.

This is as good as it gets for Czech lager. It’s so well balanced, with a thirst quenching spicy hop bitterness, and a nice subtle supportive malt backbone, like crusty sourdough bread. There’s just a touch of honey and lemon, too.

This is light bodied, clean and super drinkable. I could just pound mugs of this if I ever had the chance.

I just adore the love and care that went into this beer.

355ml can served in a footed pilsner glass. Can is dated 08/June/2022. Received from @coronaeus in a mulligan box from a LIF associated with NBS BIF #15.

Poured pretty clear until I added the last centimeter or two. Big head -- maybe 3 fingers. Settles slowly. Lots of carbonation. Smell is grainy and clean, maybe a hint of grass.

Taste is much more prominently in the hoppy direction. Lemon zest, lots of cut grass, pretty strong bitter finish, lots of floweriness. Mild honeysuckle sweetness, slightly sweet doughiness.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp. Overall, very nice.

Clear golden pour - touch of chill haze - with finger plus of creamy white head.
Grassy, slightly grainy with hints of caramel malt on the nose - there is a gentle smokey aroma, and maybe a tiny hint of sulphur.
Clean bright pale malt on the palate - crisp, grassy, with a bit of caramel sweetness, again just a bit of a smokey note and a spicy hop kick at the back with a balancing bitterness; once again just a hint of sulphur.
Crisp medium mouthfeel - well carbonated with a soft but spicy lingering bitterness.

Brilliant warm gold body, slightest haze, capped by a white head with about a minute retention.
Fresh, pure, crisp malt - fresh rain, apple orchard, dash of caramel.
Flavour follows the aroma, crisp, clean and pure, like a mountain spring and field of grain, but now accompanied by prominent resin and spice hop flavour and bitterness; result is super dry, with the grainy malt backbone carrying through subtly; medium carbonation and body.

Simplicity at it's finest, this is beautifully crafted, though I wouldn't mind a bit more malt flavour in the balance (this is a hoppier style of lager, and I haven't had many to compare to, but even so). Perfection for summer bbq.
