a flavorful mexican lager (still no category for that here on BA), but not quite true to style for me. its a little fuller bodied, a little sweeter, and quite a bit less crisp and refreshing than the best of them, even though its still plenty drinkable and the somewhat more robust flavor is nice with their boldly flavored food in here, which is excellent. its a touch deeper in color right away from the tap, short of orange or anything, but not the pale yellow i look for in the style either. short white head on top, decent lace and retention. aroma here is a bit of malt sweetness, not as pale or as corny as some of them, but still on the lighter side. its missing the mexican lager yeast fruitiness i like, including that zippy brisk texture from a complete lagering process, no lime nuance, minimal on the fermentation side really, and its a significant omission in a style where the yeast flavor is generally quite important. the hops are also really light, so the opportunity for that herbal or citrus freshness is missed. its just not as satisfying as i wanted it to be with spicy food, but its not a poorly made beer or anything, maybe just seems a little conservative or something, not quite authentic, but not bad. i only had time for two in here, and i preferred the smoked scotch type ale, but this will appease the lighter drinking crowd as a mindless slammer.
