i like a darker saison, and i wanted to like this one more, but its just trying to do a little too much with one beer, and i think the whole thing is a bit muddled, at least for my tastes. for one, it benefits absolutely nothing from its strength, and this would be a preferable beer in the 6% abv range, not that its not, but saison is a drinking beer for me and this one just doesnt have that level of pace for me. i get a gin sort of botanical nature to this, herbal like, it must be from the yeast, piney though too, but it clashes with the malt base here, which seems almost more built like an imperial brown than any kind of saison i have seen before, cocoa and some caramel, not as dry as i like saison to be, and just sort of lackluster on the whole. good carbonation and the body isnt too much, but the yeast and the dark malts are odd together, its a little sharp, and i dont want more than one of these. they could rework this to be something quite good, but i think the abv needs to drop, the yeast needs to cool down a bit, and something like rye needs to bridge the gap a little better. a work in progress i would think...
