Packaged on October 4th, 2023 - enjoyed on November 26th, 2023 - poured from a pint can into my Samuel Smith nonic.
Clear russet to seal brown body with bright auburn/sinopia highlights. Soft soapy head recedes to a light surface slick and collar. Fine sandy lacing; milquetoast retention.
Toast and coffee in the nose - smooth and inviting.
Pancake batter, caramel, and Mexican hot chocolate on the palate with cinnamon and low earth hop notes emerging at times. Medium finish, with the malt subsumed under the adjuncts. It seems more sweet than it actually is. The coffee helps add some bitterness and complexity for balance.
Creamy, medium-light bodied, ABV well concealed, gentle carbonation.
Best consumed fresh as once the coffee falls off I think the flavor will be too one-dimensional. Enjoyable enough, but more of a "flavored beverage" than a traditional ale - alas.

Type: 16-oz. can

Glass: Pure Project 14-oz. snifter elemental (water) glass
Price: $3.00
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa, Calif.
Purchased: Dec. 30, 2021
Consumed: Jan. 1, 2022
Misc.: Canned on Nov. 9, 2021
Grabbed five cans of stuff I hadn’t tried on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. This one piqued my interest. Untappd’s description was a “Porter brewed with cajeta, cinnamon, Mexican chocolate, coffee.” Nice.
Poured a very dark, almost pitch black color with 3-to-4 fingers of khaki-white head. Lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled cinnamon, Mexican chocolate, coffee, allspice, anise, pepper, bark, caramel and toasted pecan. Not as good from the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Tasted just as good as the nose. In order got cinnamon, Mexican chocolate, coffee, allspice, anise, pepper, caramel and toasted pecan. (Taste - 4.25)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. I wish this was a little heavier. (Feel - 4.00)
Just a really good porter. Excellent in fact. Will be getting some more of this down the road. Well done, SouthNorte. (Overall - 4.25)
