Can from the Packie
Deep brown with faint amber edges and a bubbly tan head that slowly dissipates. Sweet sugary candy like maltiness with plenty of resinous pine and pithy citrus to counter.

Many thanks to SawDog505 for this one!!!

A - Pours a very hazy deep garnet color with a good two finger thick billowy foam head congregating on top. The foam is very sticky on the sides of the glass.

S - Intense juicy citrus on the nose with resiny sweet pineapple and grapefruit with minimal sweet malt buried below.

T - Sweet malt base throughout with some caramel and crashing over the top is sticky pine resin, sweet grapefruit, spicy fruit rind, some peppery notes, mango, and pineapple. Overall, the sweetness hits in the form of candied sugar assertive pine bitterness to bring it back in check and not get overly cloying. Nice lingering resiny goodness after the sip with fruity pine.

M - Thick and approaching syrupy on the texture, very dry on the back of the tongue, and pronounced warming in the back of the throat while it slides down your pie hole. The lining of the mouth turns into a bit of cotton-like texture from the hop bill.

O - This is definitely noteworthy and I would have scored the taste closer to a 4.50 but felt the alcohol presence was competing too much. If that's the only thing I have to gripe about with this beer?? We haven't seen red IPA's for awhile from brewers and I'm really stoked someone is taking the bull by the horns and brewing one of these again. There's a few out there in the crowded field of IPA's, but not enough. Hats off to Kettlehead for brewing this style and definitely recommended, really enjoying this. Thanks again, TS!!

Haven't been super-into a lot of the recent Kettlehead hoppy stuff, but most of them are at least drinkable. I think my main issue tends to be the pricing, lack of information about the beers themselves on the brewery's site (and the info that's there is... not super informational, a lot of the time), and, of course, no can dating. Luckily, it takes only a minute to check when the most recent batch of each beer was packaged on their site, but it's still silly. Anyway, I really grabbed this because it's a double red IPA, a very uncommon style these days. I am excited to see if Kettlehead can pull this one off!

The pour is definitely a dark amber color with moderate clarity if held up to direct light... some slight brown undertones and hints of deep, sunset-orange, all topped off with a great head of khaki-colored suds that leave behind exemplary lacing as the foam peters out a bit, retaining with a solid finger after the initial showing of two-and-a-half fingers. Very nice pour. I was worried this would be dingy and muddy looking, but it's definitely better than expected. Score!

I am impressed by the nose here, as well. It starts off with definite caramel sweetness rounded out by a huge array of tropical fruit, mostly pineapple, mango, and passion fruit. There's also a bit of resin in there as well, just kinda hanging around and reminding me that this probably will still have a nice bite/kick to it on the tongue. Notes of tangerine, pomelo, and spruce as it warms a bit. I am really looking forward to sipping on this and discovering what it's all about.

Again, impressive... really bold flavor profile with a dominant caramel sweetness upfront mingling with flavorful and complex hoppy elements ranging from pine resin to dankness to intense tropical fruit. I would probably prefer just a little more assertive bitterness, but it's undeniable that this is pretty well-balanced overall. Strong pineapple/orange/passion fruit that works well with the chewy malt bill. Not even a hint of the 9% ABV here, which makes this bad boy kinda dangerous. Would definitely revisit this one, but I still am not sure I'll be shelling out the bucks for KH stuff on the regular in the near future.

Poured into a 16 oz can shaped pint glass canned on 2/9/2021. Pours a very dark amber with a finger plus sticky off white head with reddish hues that leaves loads of thin webs of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma pine, caramel, toffee, apricot, a hit of amaretto, and grapefruit rind. 4.5

Taste follows toffee, caramel, amaretto, upfront with apricot, pine, and grapefruit in nice rather balanced finish. 4.5

Mouthfeel is big, gentle carbonation, not dry, and at 9% ABV extremely approachable. 4.5

Overall you don’t see many Hoppy Imperial Red Ale or Red DIPA these days and I am really enjoying this sauce. Well done Kettlehead Brewing. 4.5
