We're pleased to welcome back our limited release single malt barley wine, Fourteen Forty, in its third rendition of the series.
On this batch we chose to use Marris Otter malt fermented with a traditional English yeast strain. From there the beer was aged in dark sugar rum barrels.
Distinct notes of toffee, dried dark fruit & caramelized sugar rise to the top as a rich and chewy mouthfeel rounds off it's sweet yet balanced finish.

Oh how much I love a good English Barleywine... but... as always seems to be the fad these days this one went in a barrel. There was no need for putting this in a barrel, as it takes it into a much more dominating boozy-ness than necessary and overwhelms the rest of the character. Shame, I bet I would have loved this straight-up.

Picked up a 4-pack of this recently at The Packie in Manchester, for $26.99.... digging in on a lazy, mild Sunday afternoon....
Poured into my trusty Smutty Sniftah, it's a clear, rich, deep amber/ruby/mahogany color. Lovely! Carbo is fine and steady, with a thin, fine layer of beige suds sitting on top. Aroma has lots of toffee and brown sugar, with a hint of rum. The body is thick and chewy, with a smooth and creamy feel on the tongue.
Flavor has a distinct layer of caramelized brown sugar, with some toffee/caramel action as well. Then there's a healthy dose of dark fruit, like raisins, black cherries and figs. The rum is subtle and light, but present. Like the previous 2 iterations, this is quite tasty and drinkable! Prosit!!
