473 mL can included in a Sons of Kent mixed pack; coded 1527 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy pale golden-yellow colour, producing one finger of tight, foamy white head that falls apart within a couple of minutes. The survivors include a thin collar and a filmy cap, with a snaking band of lace painted across the glass; looks fine so far. Understated, mildly fruity aroma with hints of orchard fruit, mandarin orange and floral hops.
Its flavours are alright, but it doesn't strike me as particularly pilsner-esque. Grainy malts are supported by fruity hop-derived flavours of pear, indeterminate citrus and melon, with floral hops rising towards the finish. A touch of grassy bitterness fades into a weakly floral aftertaste that trends dry. Light-ish in body, with active, micro-bubbled carbonation that adds crispness to this lager's otherwise smooth, slightly soft mouthfeel. Effortlessly easy to toss back; I could probably toss a few of these back on a Friday night without complaint.
Final Grade: 3.67, a B grade. Enzo is a serviceable dry hopped lager, but its pilsner cred is questionable at best. The malt bill seems a bit lacklustre, and the hop flavours - while enjoyable enough on their own - could use more of a noble presence, to maintain the illusion that I am actually drinking a pilsner. On some level, Italian pilsners seem to present a Sophie's choice sort of tradeoff: you want those dry hop flavours to pop, in order to draw in the hopheads who would otherwise be selecting a pale ale. Yet if the dry hops are too dominant, or the malt flavours are weak, then the folks who just wanted a lager/pilsner might start to lose interest. I'd drink this beer again, but it's not high priority.
