Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Jan 31 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy apricot yellow, producing one finger of smooth, foamy white head that settles off within sixty seconds or so. The surface is barren afterwards - no cap or collar, not even a speck of lace. There's some lacto sour armpit funk on the nose, as well as notes of mango, peach concentrate, passion fruit and cantaloupe.
It's a palatable fruit beer, though the whole 'sour' angle is underutilized IMO. A little bit of lactic acidity at the forefront, with mango quickly taking over; hints of stone fruit and citrus are mixed in as well, with passion fruit flavours gaining momentum towards the finish; more mango/passion fruit juicy-sweetness into the aftertaste, which is weakly tart. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation that gently tickles the tongue; feels juicy and a little fluffy in the mouth, with good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.56, a B grade. Mango Passionfruit Hi-Fi goes all in on the fruit flavours, which is not necessarily a bad way to go about a fruited sour. My issues with this one concern the lack of sourness and the lack of beer-y flavours in general - it's not that this beer is unappealing, it's just not really what I'm looking for in a fruity sour, as it drinks more like a plain ol' fruit beer if you ask me. If you enjoy those cartons of tropical fruit juice/nectar from Del Monte, Tropicana, etc. then this Sons of Kent sour might be the beer for you. I'd drink this again, but I'd have to really be craving mango.
