Tallboy from Maud's Variety; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep, clear chestnut brown hue with brick red highlights; it's capped off with more than an inch of bubbly, foamy, khaki-coloured head that erodes within a couple of minutes. A frothy collar and filmy cap linger on, with scant lace deposition - looks alright. Understated aroma of roasted grains and bready malts, with hints of earthy hops and dark chocolate.
Tastes chocolate-forward, at least for a black lager - cocoa, milk chocolate and toasted bread at the forefront, with toffee and roasted grains close in tow. Rather sweet finish; baker's chocolate, cocoa and bran muffin, with roasty bitterness persisting into a malty aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that weakly brushes across the palate; smooth mouthfeel and good quaffability.
Final Grade: 3.58, a passable B grade. Nevermore's balance is a little off-kilter, with chocolate flavours being overrepresented IMO - not an inherently damning trait by itself, but it does steer this Sons of Kent brew more towards 'thin brown ale' vs. a true black lager. On the other hand, I love that name, and it was also the official beer of Chatham-Kent's Crowfest 2023 - which, I must admit, is a definite plus in my books. There's plenty of room for improvement, but I liked this beer enough to give it another try.
