473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Sons of Kent mixed pack; dated Oct 3 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours a clear chestnut brown colour with brick red highlights; floating atop is less than a finger of fizzy, light tan-coloured head that disintegrates within sixty seconds. A sickly thin collar is the only leftover worth mentioning - no cap or lacing. Not a great-looking stout, and the aroma is also less than inspiring. A little earthy, like potting soil, and somewhat ashy. I do get hints of coffee and chocolate, as well as a touch of dark fruits, but it's all too subdued - not at all what you want out of a coffee stout.
The flavours are, um, serviceable - though frankly I think this drinks more like a brown ale than a stout. Leaning towards the sweet side without being overly saccharine: milk chocolate, steel-cut oats, dark fruits, caramel and a muted note of black coffee. Light ashiness and roast on the back end, with sweetened coffee and caramel lasting briefly into a bittersweet aftertaste. Light in body, with sharp carbonation that isn't suited for this context; too thin and fizzy for a coffee stout, but otherwise easy enough to toss back.
Final Grade: 3.24, a C+. In a disappointing turn of events, this Early Bird missed the worm entirely, right before flying into a window. Tasteless jokes aside, I don't want to sound too harsh - this is not an awful or undrinkable beer, but it is utterly mediocre in virtually every way that matters. The weak visuals and aroma aren't deal breakers, but a coffee stout with weak coffee flavours? That's not cool, man. I've liked plenty of Sons of Kent brews in the past, but this one needs some serious tweaks before I'd recommend it as a viable pick.
