473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Sons of Kent mixed pack. Dated Sep 4 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours foggy and effervescent, its pale golden-hued body crowned with more than an inch of fluffy, foamy white head that lasts for the better part of five minutes. A frothy collar and sudsy cap linger on, with a messy coat of beautiful lace painted onto the perimeter of the glass - off to a strong start. Floral, earthy hops and bready malts on the nose, with hints of pine resin as well as some fruity notes, e.g. berries, orange peel and grapefruit.
Not bad at all - it starts off with a sturdy backbone of bready, lightly caramelized malts, supporting hints of berries and tropical fruit. More hop forward on the back end of the sip, with floral, earthy notes, grapefruit and dank pine resin bitterness taking over. Fruity, citrusy conclusion that fades into a dank, resiny aftertaste that persists for a few seconds. Medium in body, with moderately spirited carbonation that contributes to a frothy-soft mouthfeel. Pretty drinkable, given its strength and bitterness.
Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. West Coastin' is not the most novel Sons of Kent IPA I've had, but it's still a respectable effort that I'd try again. This sampler pack is getting very long in the tooth, so it's fair to assume that this pale ale is not at its best right now - that being said, it still tastes fine and I enjoyed my glass. Maybe this is a one-off and we'll never see it again, or maybe they'll release another batch later this year - in the latter case, I'd love to try it fresh, because I do think it has potential.
