473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Sons of Kent mixed pack. Dated Sep 16 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours a foggy blonde colour, stirring up one finger of loose, sudsy white head that lasts for three minutes or so. Its remnants include a frothy collar and filmy cap, with modest lace deposition after a sip or two. The aroma is fruity, comprised of gooseberry and peach, as well as lesser notes of passion fruit, lime zest and lemony citrus zest.
A highly drinkable cold IPA that makes the most of its 5.2%. Fruity hop flavours of peach, apricot and passion fruit nectar interact well with a wheaty, grainy pale malt base. There are also some pithy citrus notes later on; grapefruit & lemon mainly, with a twist of lime. Finishes relatively clean, with grain and pith dissipating into a fairly dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with assertive, micro-bubbled carbonation that contributes to this brew's fluffy-soft mouthfeel. I could easily enjoy a couple of these in a row.
Final Grade: 3.86, a worthy B+. While they're not generally my cup of tea, I can see the appeal that cold IPAs have for a certain subset of hopheads. If you want an IPA that drinks a bit lighter without sacrificing too much in the flavour department, they're a natural option - and for what it's worth, I'd absolutely take Cold Chillin' over most session IPAs. This is not all that much stronger (abv-wise) than a session ale, but it still manages to muster a respectable force of mostly-Galaxy hop flavours that I appreciated. Hopefully Sons of Kent releases another batch in 2025, because I'd love to try it fresh.
