German Style Rye Ale Collaboration with Sagamore Spirit (Baltimore, MD)
Description: Our friends at Sagamore Spirit (Baltimore, MD) supplied us with some of the rye they grow here in Maryland! We decided to showcase it by brewing an obscure German style, Roggenbier (Rye Beer). It's a cousin of the bready-spicy-fruity Dunkleweisse, but with rye subbing in for the wheat!

Cloudy brown, small khaki head, poor retention, doesn't look like what I'd imagine a take on a dunkelweizen should look like
Spicy clove, light banana, brown bread aroma
Green banana, clove, pumpernickel flavor
Medium bodied, oily and fluffy simultaneously, needs way more carbonation
Really needs a lot more carbonation to make it pop. Very underwhelming.

16 ounce can poured into a nonic pint glass.
Canned 10/6/23
L: pouring clear, medium brown/tawny, looking chestnut brown and milky/hazy in the glass, khaki head fades quickly to a sparse cap.
S: Opens with hints of something sweet and light, quickly moves to bready malt, hints of raisin, not quite banana fruity yeast flavor stands out after it warms a bit, and bubblegum.
T Malt forward, more dark fruit than spicy rye.
F: Soft and smooth then crisping to a finishing bite, body is medium weight.
O: My first of this style so no frame of reference, but I was expecting the rye to be more pronounced, that said, it’s still a good glass of beer.

16 oz can poured into a tulip pint glass. Pours a muddy reddish-brown color with almost zero head - an ugly beer by any standard. At least there are no floaties. Aroma and flavor feature toasted pumpernickel bread, light spicy rye (not nearly as much as I was anticipating), milk chocolate, banana bread, and hints of citrusy/earthy hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Overall, it's a unique beer and a fairly tasty one.
Note: I was looking through the 4 beer styles I hadn't yet tried and sorting by "most recently reviewed" and came across this beer. Of course I had to drive the 30 minutes to Sapwood to pick one up. Score. Now I just have to find a faro (Lindeman's might be the easiest to obtain?), happoshu (no idea), and Czech pale lager.

Poured from the can into a nonic(k) pint glass. Canned Oct 6th 2023.
Muddy copper body with a dark rusted brown and red mix of hues. Milky kind of appearance with a one finger topped fleeting tan head. Settles to a thin collar with a little bit of a puck, and slightly oily looking on top.
Fun aroma. Huge banana ester on this, with the classic hefe character, and more of a darker hinting clove note of spice. Malt character is a little burried here but there's still plenty on the nose to enjoy. Kind of impressive in a way.
Palate is an intersting fun romp. Spicy sensing malt background from the rye, with a twist of banana sweetness and even an almost cinnamon like punch. Fruity afterfinish, almost berry like with prickly and real spicy dryness. Comes off like a dunkel but very different and has highly accentuated rye flavors and character. The balance is a little bit off kilter, but the flavors are solid. There's much to explore and enjoy here.
Overall pretty fun tasting beer, it's lacking a bit more body and thickness that I was hoping for. The spicy malt angle is definitely there, and if you are a rye fan this will suit you well.
