This is by far the best "American" (not IPA) Pale Ale that I have ever had. It is the smoothest, maltiest, flavorful and consistently brewed pale ale in the Chicago area market. It is definitely a more "traditional" American Pale Ale. I would consider it a bit old-school compared to the recent "HOP Forward" brews on the market today. It is definitely well-balanced and very malty, but still sweet, syrupy and smooth.
I love pale ales with malty backbones and smooth rich hoppy textures. This combination is hard to find in many of today's overly sweet, fruity, hop forward brews. This is almost malt forward, hop neutral. Still very good even if you prefer the flashy hop forward beers.
