Craft beer has become as customary to the U.S. culture as American Pie. And Mortalis brewers see it no differently as they roll the flavors of blackberry and raspberry into a crusty sour ale base flavor with hints of spice, cream and gumption.

As part of their Diner Pie Series, Mixed Berry Pie pours with a choppy and hazy mauve color to carry an appearance of maroon wines but with a bumpy slurry of a froth. Somewhat of an ugly duckling in appearance, the nose is dramatically different with a bold perfume of fresh baking pie, dark berries, sweetness and tartness with hints of cream and pastry crust. And not to disappoint, the early favors of pie filling, taffy and fruit tarte coat the palate with dessert-like fashion.

A rise of tartness brings the fruit flavors to the forefront once the ale hits the middle palate. Raspberry and blackberry lead the way but a backdrop of lemon, lime, green apple and red grape carry much of the acidic load. A rounded creaminess of vanilla and cream give a soft and soothing reprieve from the tartness while a hint of cinnamon spice brightens the late palate and brings a pleasant peppery character to close.

Full bodied for sour ale, the sweet and tart ale finishes candied and pie-like with hints of vinous red wines offering a lightly piquant warmth that rides alongside of a tart citric after palate.

Canned 2/8/23

When I grabbed this can from my fridge, I didn’t realize it was Mortalis at first, since all I’ve had from them before has had a very specific art style, and this threw me off. That being said, a mixed berry pie sounds exactly like something Mortalis would do. Let’s get into it

Pours an opaque reddish purple with a finger of thick reddish pink head that fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

The nose is pretty straightforward and emulates a pie quite well. I’m picking up on aromas of blackberry jam, tart raspberry, graham cracker, toasted coconut, sweet vanilla, pie crust, and light brown sugar

The taste mostly follows the nose, though it’s a shade sweeter. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting blackberry jam, toast coconut, pie crust, honey, raspberry sorbet, light graham cracker, and vanilla. The swallow brings notes of blackberry jam, jammy blueberry, granola, graham cracker, vanilla, toasted coconut, and light honey

A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a thick and frothy beer. Finishes surprisingly dry and refreshing

There’s nothing particularly special about this one, but it’s certainly well done for what it is. Tavour has been great for letting me try all these fun Mortalis beers
