This Imperial stout was brewed exclusively for Rochester Elite Barrel Pickers. Aged in small format Kings County Distillery barrels for 463 days before packaging, this adjunct free stout allows for the character of both barrels to shine. Notes of milk chocolate, currants, and oak are met by a full body that carries a warming sensation on each sip.

2024 vintage; consumed on 8/12/2025

Pours an immense, black body capped with no present head, a viscous, oily liquid with minimal cap, collar, or lacing evolving from the density.

Aroma wafts mint chocolate chips into rich peanut cream far in the distance, leaving residual vanillins guiding to notes of caramel and charry dark chocolate fudge; an oaky lingering leaves a lasting impression as the bouquet fades.

Taste offers distant cherry esters into wintergreen mint met with waves of dark chocolate upfront; deft char tinges the mid-palate from the backdrop, yielding burnt mocha into heavier oak on the finish.

Mouthfeel brings a full body and minimal carbonation, settling to dense textures and a slick char coating the tongue; a taut prickle meets mild-moderate warmth on the back end, culminating in an almost chewy swallow.

Endearingly distinct yet uncomplicated in form; this near-Goldilocks balance of hitter and sweet yields another silken malt tapestry from the Perun series.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like both milk and dark chocolate, with tobacco, lots of caramel, some vanilla, cookie dough, and oak.

The Perun series has been unilaterally delicious. I think Perun III has been the best of these, but this one might be the second best. There’s a wonderful oaky spice to this, with the barrel adding some caramel and vanilla too, with a slightly cookie dough vibe as well. There’s some tobacco, and a ton of pleasantly creamy milk chocolate flavor. There’s just a hint of roast, but not a lot. This has some pleasant sweetness but it’s nowhere near as sweet as Mortalis stouts can sometimes be.

This is thick, but not ridiculously so, like some of the earlier Perun entries. It’s not super boozy.

I wish these beers were easier to get because they are just really delicious and what I want out of a Mortalis barrel aged stout.
