Simply made with a single malt and small amounts of roasted barley, creating deliciously subtle nutty, toasty and sweet caramel notes. 12 IBU

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from my favourite LCBO at The Roundhouse Centre in nearby Windsor. My first beer from the Bobcaygeon, ON brewery.

Appearance: Pours with a finger of quickly dissipating head that did not lace. Boasts a dark brown but mostly clear body that shows some fairly strong carbonation.

Smell: Light toffee malt with some tea and plum and maybe the slightest whiff of dry, ground coffee. It really doesn't achieve desired potency. Even after being given a good chunk of time to warm up, it's just not making much of a punch.

Taste: Much like the smell, it's just not strong enough. It starts with some very mild toffee malt, but it's not quite able to hide a club soda/seltzer note before notes of tea, plum and a herbal note take over and quickly end things. Given the lower than 5% ABV, I'll be a bit charitable here, but it doesn't have enough punch.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is honestly too high for this beer, as that seltzer note is likely being caused by it. It transitions well and knows to finish things quick, but a completely clean aftertaste isn't exactly what I tend to go for in Scottish Ale.

Drinkability: On the lighter side of medium body. Refreshing and easy to put back, but the high carbonation does also seem to make it a bit gassy. Easy enough to quaff but really not what I typically look for in a Scottish Ale.

Final Thoughts: I think a better branding for this beer would be half malt Scottie ale. This is to Scottish Ale as Light Lager is to Vienna Lager. It's not bad if you were seeking out something lighter, like say a more toffee than caramel focused light bitter, and you could do worse in the summer, but this is just too light an offering for this style in my opinion.

473ml can served cold into a beer mug. LCBO purchase. Canned July 10, 2023.

Appearance - A nice looking deep amber color with great clarity and a plethora of off-white foam. Excellent staying power too. Iced tea in color is also an apt descriptor.

Smell - Light maltiness, some faint caramel notes and a slight bit of fruitiness. Rather subdued either way.

Taste - Thin matiness, with some adjacent sweetness. Caramel and toffee the most likely flavors. Not a lot else and the flavors leave the tongue rather quickly.

Mouthfeel - Medium light bodied with a lack of carbonation. Easy to drink just not a ton of substance here. Although the low carbonation does work well for the style.

Overall - Nothing off with Single Malt Scottie, but nothing really on. Besides the outstanding appearance, there's a decent brew with thin flavors and more sweetness than I'd care for. Worth a shot, but not a standout.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; coded Jan 10 2023 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear copper-bronze colour, generating two fingers of smooth, foamy, off white-coloured head that quickly collapses. A couple of minutes later, it has dropped down to a thin collar and filmy cap, with a few far flung flecks of lace tossed about in the process. The aroma is subdued and primarily malty: I'm getting toffee, toasted bread and digestive biscuit, with hints of caramel, coffee and leafy hops.

Straightforward, approachable flavour profile - there's toasted bread, toffee/caramel sweetness and a touch of roasted grains, with minimal development beyond that. Hints of tea leafiness and dark fruits on the back end, with toasted malts and mild toffee sweetness tailing off into the aftertaste. Thin-bodied, with active carbonation that adds some crispness to this brew's watery mouthfeel; good drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.4, a serviceable B-. Old Dog's Single Malt Scottie is an underwhelming, inoffensive beer that I don't plan to return to anytime soon. The flavours honestly aren't that bad, but they're as shallow as a wading pool - and there's also the matter of the thin, unsatisfying mouthfeel, which further weakens the experience. This offers only the bare minimum of what I want out of a Scottish ale, so I don't think I'd recommend it on that basis... though I suppose if you enjoy malty amber lagers, then this might be a passable substitute.

Cola brown, no head, no lace. Nose is pleasant enough, a little coffee, a little peat. Encouraging. Plain Jane after that. Subdued undistinguished flavour. Thin bodied. Slightly acrid finish. Drinkable but uninspiring.
