saison type with ugli fruit, super old now, not sure how old, but this is definitely a little past its prime, maybe kind of a lot, bottle number 87 of 144. close to flat, murky and muted straw color from the bottle, dense looking for what it is, not a great start. it smells only softly tangy, a little cheesy, and like a whole bunch of pale wheat malt thats been mashed and just sort of left to sit here, like worty in that way, underdeveloped on the yeast side for sure, or faded, but i dont know things like brett character and acidity and such to fade in beer once established really, so that would be odd. my sense is that this never really quite got there. i am not real familiar with ugli fruit, but there is apparent citrus to this, like orange and lemon crossed, a touch sweet still, but also oxidized, and in the absence of any real pucker, it seems lacking. i got this because it looked old, so hard to choose from all the heady bottles in here, but this wasnt a great pick, interesting more as a history lesson about the brewery, like maybe they werent always as incredible as they sure are now, fun to taste in that context, but this was far and away the least impressive of all their beers i drank last weekend, not even close. i wonder if its moment has just passed, its totally flat too, a shame, and without any reviews here from when it was first made, maybe it will always be a mystery. not up to their current standards, at least at this point. seems to be some variance between bottles and batches, so maybe not all is lost, mine was just a miss...
