Erebus is the Greek god of darkness, and he's arrived in New York City. This American stout has a balanced, dry, mildly acidic roast character and a bittersweet chocolate finish.

16oz can.
L: Black with a red/tan head that collapses to a ring and leaves just a few spots lacing.
S&T: Coffee and cocoa. Medium sweetness and low bitterness.
F: Medium body with a silky, albeit light, mouthfeel.
O: A nice coffee/chocolate taste but a bit over carbonated and mouthfeel is a tad thin.

When does a Stout look and feel like a Stout without the heft and booze?
When it's like this.
Yeah, I know it's not Stout-drinking season but this wasn't typical as it was quite easygoing, accessible, and full without the potency that I expected - even from an American Stout. This was the first beer that I purchased from Torch and Crown as I found it at Greenpoint's new location during my first trip there. When I picked up their take on the All Together, it was refreshing to see that the craft scene in New York had finally gotten a hold of Manhattan!
Very dark pour to this with a thick head topping the liquid off. Big bubbles were in it as they quickly burst, leaving the foam to settle unevenly. Dark roast, coffee beans, oats, and a hint of bitter chocolate were in the muted nose as the taste was much more bold and appealing. Dark fruit and espresso entered the fray as this warmed up with the end result being a beer that straddled the line between Stout and Porter. A medium body, soft slickness, and light carbonation all worked well together as this felt like coffee with some bitter chocolate notes, but without the jolt!
While not a session beer, I'd easily reach for another as the aftertaste left a cloying and brewed impression on me. The description of this beer was spot-on with the end result being something that was an American Stout in essence but not quite like any that I had before. Nice job by Torch & Crown on this one, as this undated can was perfect for a quiet, lazy summer night such as this!

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a thin patch of bubbles on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of chocolate malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has lots of flavors of dark and chocolate malts with a slight bit of roast and a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really enjoyed the aromas and flavors of chocolate malts in this stout.
