Our Beardmore Kölsch is a clean and crisp lagered ale. It is delicately balanced, with subtle hints of fruity notes. It has a pleasant and refreshing finish on the palette.

George Beardmore had a high vision for a small tannery he purchased in Acton, Ontario in 1856. By 1899 the tannery had grown to an impressive one million square feet. The iconic Beardmore & Co. water tower stood high above the many buildings that covered the 160-acre site. At its peak, it was the largest tannery in the entire British Empire! We’re sure many workers at the tannery enjoyed a cool, refreshing beer after their long work day…if only its was our Beardmore Kölsch.

Bright clear golden colour. Moderate, short-lived head, no lace to speak of. Ordinary looking stuff. Hops and noticeable alcohol on the nose. Medicinal in character. Hoppy to taste with some delicious grain up the middle. Sweet up the middle with a bitter finish. Thin-bodied, watery. Mostly ordinary, too medicinal for a beer with a common ABV, redeemed to some degree by tasty grain.

This beer advertises itself as a "Kolsch Style" yet it has a degree of haziness where it should be clear, a sweetness where there should be none. On the bright side it does have a slight hint of apple.

L: Transparent medium yellow, a covering of foam, no bubbles
S: Very subtle floral citrus and banana note
T: Slightly sweet doughy malt, earthy and spicy hops, banana on the finish, not very bitter and a hint of alcohol
F: Thick creamy and foamy, a bit oily and not drying
O: Interesting complex taste and enjoyable overall but probably not something I'd pick up again

473 mL can from the LCBO; packaged Oct 8 2020 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a sparkling clear golden-blonde hue, with one finger of tight, foamy white head gathered atop; within the next few minutes, it has been worn down to a thin collar and filmy cap. An attractive, arcing band of lace has been left behind, leaving the glass looking fine indeed. Its aroma consists mostly of grainy, bready malts and honeyed sweetness, with maybe a faint wisp of grassy hay also discernible. Reminds me more of a blonde ale than a kölsch, but that's more of an observation than a complaint.

A decent lagered ale without any bells or whistles - it's got a bready, slightly doughy flavour with a very slight touch of caramelized sugars. The sip concludes with cereal grain sweetness accompanied by a hint of grassy, herbal hop bitterness and an earthy, dirty note that briefly carries into the aftertaste. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that lends a prickly, lively feel to this brew, which feels crisp and refreshing in the mouth. I'm not gonna climb over someone for another can, but it is the sort of beer I could drink all night and not really get sick of.

Final Grade: 3.63, a serviceable B grade. Beardmore Kölsch fills the role of a pale lager/blonde ale/lagered ale adequately, but I must reiterate that it doesn't strike me as particularly... kölsch-y? Now in all fairness, this isn't necessarily a go-to style for me, but there are a few I do pick up semi-regularly, including Gaffel's, as well as a couple Ontario-made interpretations (e.g. Absent Landlord and Pub House Ale). I'm thinking a kölsch side-by-side showdown is required in the near future to sort out which one I genuinely like best.

473 ml can served cool into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $3.20 CDN. Canned on April 3, 2020.

Appearance - Dark gold into color, crystal clear and with a finger plus of quickly receding loose white head. No lacing to speak of and the bubbles are pretty sparse.

Smell - grainy initially with some raisins, figs and caramel in the nose too.

Taste - Rich and doughy, quite sweet with caramel flavors and fruity notes of figs and raisins once again. Possible some sweet corn flavor in this brew as well.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, but a little more sticky than some. Carbonation is quite modest.

Overall - An okay Kolsch, the flavors are good, but this drinks a little stickier and thicker than many. Not light or super crisp and refreshing.

Pours a nice gold colour and I can see the bubbles rising to the top. Having said that, the bubbles are not accumulating into a head. All I can say about the smell is malts and sweetness. In the taste I detect some sweetness and a bit of toffee and malts. No bitterness and not very hoppy. This is a good kolsch but not a great one
