No canned on date. Poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint.
A: Clear medium amber with short-lived 1-2 finger sandy-colored foamy head with average retention and some shaggy lacing.
S: Munich malt heavy aroma, very toasty with a lot of bread crust. Lightly nutty, not a lot of hop aroma, maybe an herbal note in there.
T: Flavor is definitely bold for the Vienna lager style, very rich and heavy on melanoidins, definitely on the upper level of acceptable for the style. It is higher than I prefer for my Vienna lagers, which is a little more easy drinking. SR Amber Lager is brushing up hard against marzen in my opinion with this beer. Very good flavor, but very Munich-melanoidin heavy, a little too much to my taste. A well-brewed lager, very clean with no off-flavors. Very bready and flavorful.
M: Mouthfeel is good but the melanoidin richness does take away from the drinkability somewhat. Carbonation is appropriate and moderate with clean but not as crisp as I prefer.
O: I can see why this beer does well in competitions -- it is at the upper edge for richness for the category, a little over my sweet spot, but it is a very flavorful and well-crafted Vienna lager.
